Spotting a potential counterfeiter...

Post by TheRhino »

I've been watching eBay for ages, waiting to land one of the UK White Dwarf subscription Marine Veterans from 08.
I found one today, and out of curiosity checked the seller's other auctions. Scads of rare and out-of-production metal models. I took a gander at the seller's auctionhistory, and they have sold no less than FIVE of these models, as well as multiples of the Army Box Veteran, multiple copies of Sergeant Centurius, and large lots of the old "Sexy" Daemonettes.
None of the auctions include packaging, and every auction uses the exact same photo.

I'm nearly convinced the guy is a counterfeiter. I'd love to get my hands on one of the models to inspect it, but don't have the cash to waste.

Any way to raise a flag on this person, or would you just let it pass?

(Note: Thread moved to the appropriate forum)

I'd report them to GW & let GW decide whether or not they want to deal with it.
Feebay isn't going to do anything without proof.

I did some digging on GW's site, and for others' reference, the email for reporting counterfeiters is:

infringement@games-workshop.co.uk

Attempting to email legal@games-workshop.co.uk results in an auto-response pointing you there. Save a step ;)

GW actually got back to me on this, and asked for all the info I had available so they could look into it.

Kinda figured they would. They don't take people pilfering money from them very lightly.

I got a recast of centurious in trade once.
I noticed that he was awful thin looking, but I just thought I got a bad cast.
I found out later that he was probably a recast after getting one NIB to compare it to.

Wow, this guy is just relentless. Another large batch of counterfeits up this week:

He sells that set of Queen Alarielle weeky, and it always tops $100.

lol, he's also been buying up empty ForgeWorld baggies, look like he's not just sticking with pewter, he's expanding into fake FW product as well.

Aside from the fact that he's selling the same items repeatedly, do you have proof that he's a recaster?

Nobody has that many rare items to sell, let alone on a weekly basis.

I've repeatedly failed to make the top bids on any of the samples. As Dan said, there's no possible way he's somehow stored up 5+ copies of some of these models to sell. He's up to 8+ of several of the limited Marine models.

I posted a similar article a few months ago about someone who seemed to have an unlimited supply of Malifaux, ltd ed Lord Chompy bits. Selling them for $180 a piece. I agree that no one can have that many ltd eds.

Guys.
You're talking about what's not possible, but listing what isn't LIKELY.
Sure, it's not LIKELY that he has all of those, like he says he does. It IS possible, though.
I know a guy who had a 2 layer rifle case full of miniatures. You know what miniatures it was full of? ONE POSE... one exact specific pose... of a camel. The same model. It filled a 2 layer rifle case. The models were all in there close together, too.
That's just ONE of the scores of rifle cases he had.

It's distinctly possible this guy is ditching a hoarded collection.

Do I think it's likely? No.
Do I think he's recasting? Probably.

You can't go citing opinions as facts, though.

I mean... you CAN... LOL... But, you shouldn't.

Forgeworld was selling one ltd edition marine per customer at Adepticon, but allowing people to place orders for a maximum of 10. The guy in line behind me ordered 10 and had his wife fill out an order for an additional 10. If you had some friends along, you could have potentially bought even more...
Not saying that's the case here but it's food for thought.
