Good way to find players?

Post by Galley »

Hey all,

I'm having some problems getting ahold of tabletop Warhammer gaming groups in my area. I moved here about a year ago, and I've been into the hoby for about 6 months. I'm aware of a GW store that I frequent when I can, but I'm hoping I can find a resource that'll be more likely to put me in contact with players closer to my age (I'm in my mid-twenties).

So, does anyone know a really good resource to get in contact with fellow tabletop gamers? I've tried Craigslist with no success. I've also tried the GW website, no success.

Thanks for looking!

P.S. I'm in the Philadelphia area.

Well, you just completed step 1.

Step 2 is to ask on any other boards you frequent. Many have "Gamer Lookup" type folders for gamers in "X" area.

I'd expect you might get a PM or 2 just from BTowners who are local to you.

The only ways I would know to suggest are:

3) Local GW store.
When you go there, target people who look to be your age or older, or who you've enjoyed playing.
ASK them if they play in a regular group outside the store. ASK for an invite.
"I don't want to sound forward, but would you mind if I came and hung out some time? I'm really trying to find a regular group. I'll be mor than happy to bring along some chips & soda."
Chips and soda are VERY popular with gamers. LOL

4) You state that you "tired" the GW site. HOW did you try? Did you just do a search to see if there were any local groups to you?
Did you actually sign up your OWN group?

5) Do you have room to game at your place? Do the same as (3) above, except invite them to YOUR place.

6) Have you asked any non-gamer friends you might have made? You never know who might be interested.

7) Are you in school? Working? Take your 40K rulebook to work/school with you. Read it openly at lunch/break periods. Leave it out during the day, where it can be easily seen by passers-by. If anyone plays, they'll likely bring the subject up when they see your book (gamers love to talk gaming <G>). I've found TONS of gamers that way, over the years.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice MM, greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately I don't get out much, I won't deny that at all. I'm a full-time grad student, so I see the old GW store maybe, MAYBE once a month. I also know for certain that none of my classmates play, so no dice there.

What about online resources? Know of any other good ones?

you mentioned you were a full time grad student, I would post some fliers at the school's common areas. usually schools have gaming groups that are sponsored by the university

Heh, you're not all to far from where I am. Well, about an hour and a half away, but it's still decently close.

There's a group I go to around once a month (They do a lot more than that, though. That's just what I can get to) known as 'The Icehouse Warriors'

See, Galley.
Told ya.

LOL

Seriously, though... Glad to help.

Okay... My links are about tapped, as far as forums go.
There are more, depending on what forces you play (there's Druchii.net -or something- for DE players. The Ogre's Stronghold -can you guess what their focus is?).
I'd start with the ones above.

I'm sure you'll find an appropriate "looking for players" thread in each, where you can post that you're looking for gamers.

Good luck!

Hey Galley
Heres the reply i got

I have a site (Philadelphia Gaming Network), but it is always under construction cause I work too much these days to manage it. Hopefully over the holidays I might make a push to get it complete. However, there are a couple of shops that host their own forums. Kinda depends on the types of games as each shop caters to specific ones. Location is also another factor, everything is so spread out it is hard to get to every shop easily.

Anyway, here are the two I have visited.

- Roundtable Games & Stuff (Heavy Privateer Press and CCG). In Conshohocken, within 10-15 miles of Center City Philadelphia. Forum Link. This is my main haunt as it is the closet to home. Good group of guys, but limited game selection.

- Fat Cat Comics (Big GW, with sprinkling of Privateer). In Downington, 25+ miles from Center City Philadelphia. Forum Link. Excellent shop, just too damn far from home. I work near here and try to make it when I can. Excellent game selection.

There may be one or two others, but they don't have a forum to my knowledge. If you want, pass your friend my email: menothschosen@philagaming.net. Once I know what he is looking for and most importantly which area he lives in, I could probably point him to the right shop.

Hope that helps
Cheers
Peace
P.s not sure the links worked
