Orlando Players

Post by montaa »

Hey Guys,

I've just moved down to the Orlando FL area for the foreseeable future. I brought 3000 points of Beastmen with me and I'm scoping spots for opponants(sp?).

Does anyone down here play Fantasy? I've looked at a couple of the local hobby shops' websites and it seems that 40k dominates the sunshine state.

montaa@alum.rpi.edu if you've got a suggestion.

i live in wpb.. a few hours south, and yes 40k dominates. it seems they're not too keen on using movement like fantasy requires.

I am in Tampa Bay of Florida. There are a couple of stores around here that do Fantasy. Gate Way Games in Pinellas Park, Area games in Tampa both do. www.flgrenadiers.com is Gate Way Games site and if you are interested in a drive you can set up a game there.
Unlike how their names states "Drop Pods" do not like to be dropped

Sci-Fi City is your best bet in Orlando, and yes, it's primarily 40k, although there are still some Fantasy players there. Sci-Fi City is a mere 10 minute drive from downtown Orlando; it's a pretty good gaming place - many tables and friendly opponents.

Sci-fi city does indeed sell 40k and fantasy minis. They have had a few issues with restocks(I think they are over), but have never stopped carrying the line.

In Orlando there are really only two stores with gaming tables.

Sci-fi city( http://www.sci-fi-city.com/orlando.htm )

and

Rhubarb Games ( http://www.rhubarbgames.com )

40k is the most commonly played game, but many people have fantasy armies. You can always get in a "pick up" game of 40k, for fantasy you really should try to schedule a game.

You can do this easily by joining and posting a request on the RHUBARB GAMES FORUM or ADEPTUS ORLANDICUS FORUM. Adeptus Orlandicus is a gaming club that generally plays 40k at Sci-fi, but they have an "other games" section that you can post in.

There is a fantasy tournament the 28th of this month at Rhubarb. They are also planning on either an escalation league or campaign this fall.

According to their website Sci-Fi still sells 40k items.

It looks like my two bets are SCi-Fi and the Rhubarb store. Rhubarb is quite a ways away from me.

Tampa is a SERIOUSLY long ways. We drove down there for the Yanks-Rays game and it took forever. And I'm starting 20 miles southwest of Orlando (Davenport).

I'm probably going to enter the Tourney at Rhubarb, which is the 28th if people are interested. Nothing like heading to a tourney with an army you've never fielded before :icon_ren_bl_11:

A.) Sci-fi city :
http://www.sci-fi-city.com/orlando.htm

This is a huge store, I mean, It used to be a super market huge. At one point this place used to be the best place in town, now the service and knowedge you get there is hit or miss depending on the day and employee. The terrain set up is okay, nothing spectacular--but nothing bad. Their is also almost always someone there, though purely because of the different gamers(CCGs , lan games, and minis) your experience may vary.
I'm a bit biased here because of the experiences I've had with them, but don't let that bias you too much. There are many others who have had good experiences there. There seem to be having trouble keeping up with their GW stock lately. They stock most product lines there though and if you are looking for an RPG book Sci-fi is the place to go in Central Florida.
They have both Fantasy and 40k tourney's regularly there too.

B.)Rhubarb Games:
www.rhubarbgames.com

Rhubarb just moved to a new location. They are much smaller then Sci-fi. They have 5 dedicated tables at the moment(6th is being built). Terrain is beautiful(they originally started out making terrain). Service is top notch with little touches like staying open later if your games run long. The gaming community here is mostly 40k, but there is a good following of Warmachine, Babylon 5, Flames of War and Battlefeild Evolution. Most people have a fantasy army, but it is rare to get in a "pick up" game. They do have a forum, and if you post looking for a game you'll probably find one. They have alternating 40k and fantasy tourney's monthly and there is usually a good showing.

The store has a fairly large chunk of the Warhammer and 40K ranges. They also stock Babylon 5, Flames or War, Warmachine, Battlefield Evo and a handful of other games. They are currently working on expanding their stock now that they have more space.

I'm a bit biased since this is where I game. Their forums can be found at

http://www.rhubarbgames.com/rgf/index.php

Join up and introduce yourself there. I'm sure you'll find a game.

C.) Colesium of Comics(Kissimmee location)
http://www.coliseumofcomics.com/

This store isn't actually in Orlando, but in downtown Kissimme. This is a chain store, the other ones have a small selection of minis, but no tables. The Kissimee store is the only one that has both mins and tables.

It has been years since I've been there, but last time I was there the tables were really nice looking, the staff was so so, and the inventory was hit or miss. This might have changed though.

I can vouch for this place. It was nice, and so were the people. The guy I talked to personally didnt know Brets from Empire, but I think he was very new.
