A scam to look out for?

Post by ancientsociety »

Just thought I'd see if this has happened to anyone else and to help others keep their eyes open for anything fishy

Over the past 2 months, I've been contacted by 2 separate users with trades. Both times they have been new users with very little or no refs. Usually, they are offering older GW minis and looking for some of my newer GW stuff.

After a week or two of back and forth with both, one decided he wasn't interested but would send me their mini because he had no use for it. One decided they couldn't really afford what I was offering (I believe because it was a half trade, half buy thing) because of personal circumstances but would send me the mini gratis. Needless to say, I never rec'd either mini.

It was only a single mini each time so it wasn't a big deal. But, after thinking about it, I'm sort of wondering if these were aborted phishing scams. Perhaps they were trying to get me to send something in return for their generousity? I don't know. I hate to sound paranoid, but the circumstances surrounding both and the almost identical timing, PMs, etc. got me thinking.

Has anyone else had this experience?
Trading Guidelines:
1. Lower rating ships first - even if I am purchasing.
2. If you agree to buy something, you have 72hrs. in which to pay. If payment is not received in 72hrs., I will automatically post a Non-Payment/Backout thread.
3. Refs are left upon positive receipt of goods, NEVER beforehand!
4. I accept Paypal & USPS money orders and charge for shipping AT COST. I make no profit from it.
5. I trade NIB/new models at retail.

That is a little unusual. It's not unheard of for users to send or receive things completely free (I've done both,) but your situation is a bit of a head-scratcher. All the more reason to stick to the "new-guy-ships-first" way.

I wonder if, if these minis showed, they wouldn't be repros.

A few months ago I had someone ask about some 10mm terrain I posted. He wanted 4 sets of both types! Woohoo! I was going ot get some LOTR figs for it, all sounded good. HE was soo impressed with my work he asked me to come up with ideas for basically a whole table. I agreed.

As it was a decent sized trade and he had little or no feedback I aksed him to send first. "Sure, I expected that. Week later, nothing. Asked for the confirmation # on the package, and he said he was "Having trouble getting it out". No further contact.

Change of mind? Possibly. More likely he wanted me to send the stuff and short me the figs.
