Need help with trading parters absurd pricing scale

Post by mrsuitcasegames »

Okay, first the evidence. He wrote:
cosgrove wrote:most people hear on bartertown have a line to get stuff at least that cheap check the warstore anyone can get 25% off. so usually most stuff sells for at least 50% I would give you $40 shipped within US at most. thanks
Hes trading for 2 boxs of (40k) eldar guardians and six dire avengers that are all assembled and primed. Thats it. They are valued at approximately $92.50 (taking into account that its only 3/4 of a dire avenger box.) and hes saying that 50% is generous. This is what I wrote:

"Thats ridiculous, and wrong. Yes people can get their stuff at 20% off, and yes people sell their models at 50% off. But the 50% is generally reserved for horribly painted/coverted/assembled models or models that are otherwise in bad shape. I probably would get 50% for his badly painted tau. For models in good shape like his eldar, 35% is fair, 40% is pushing it.

By the way, thewarstore sells their stuff at 20% off.

I will however check with my friend to see if he wants to sell at the horrible price of $40.00. (Which is 60% off anyway) "

By the way, a friend of mine is using me to sell his models, as he doesn;t have a computer.

I haven't sent this message yet, but I basically just need to see if people agree with me. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

First, people on BT sell for all types of discounts. Is 50% unreasonable? It depends on the seller. Frankly, the only things I've seen sell @ less than 40% off are things that have been assembled, primed, and/or painted. You have to factor in condition and rarity. A NIB box of current Guardians could go from 20-35% off. An OOP lot of Guardians could go for more or less.

Second, it's up to you (or your friend) to decide to sell @ that discount. If you aren't willing to sell @ 50% off, tell him (and politely mention that he's always welcome to use the Warstore  ).

I've run into the "Walmart" syndrome both here and on ebay (I buy and sell on both) - people always want something for nothing. However, there is generally a cost associated with any discount. It can be higher shipping and handling, failure to pack properly, etc. Quite honestly, I'd rather take less of a discount if the seller packs well, is courteous, etc. I like shopping @ the Warstore and Noble Knight because they both offer discounts and, while they may not be the biggest % off, they are always quick, polite, and generally a pleasure to deal with.
Trading Guidelines:
1. Lower rating ships first - even if I am purchasing.
2. If you agree to buy something, you have 72hrs. in which to pay. If payment is not received in 72hrs., I will automatically post a Non-Payment/Backout thread.
3. Refs are left upon positive receipt of goods, NEVER beforehand!
4. I accept Paypal & USPS money orders and charge for shipping AT COST. I make no profit from it.
5. I trade NIB/new models at retail.

Ultimately, it's whatever price you negotiate between buyer/seller.

If I were the seller in this scenario, I'd look for different buyer(s). The terms presented seem pretty preposterous.

Forgot to add:

My advice is don't sell to him. Sit on the models for awhile. With the new Eldar codex coming out this winter, Eldar stuff should start selling very quickly.

And remember, there's always Ebay...

well speaking from experience in dealing with cosgrove i think this just might be a case of misunderstanding...

as one of the many online retailers i know my standard discount of 25% off with free shipping is a staple of my online business... i know many places offer decent discounts so shop where your happy is what i say...

service and care are 2 things that can make or break an online store

you have to have those 2 to be successful

No that is correct i don't pay retail or any where near that on bartertown nor do many hear. That is why its called bartertown. Plus the figs are primed and i am not buying them direct from GW. sorry but it was a fair cash offer you could simpy have turned offer down. Your ad did state to make offer which I honestly did in good faith. Thank you for your time and patients. Shawn

I don't know why everyone is so against that price. Its 40% off! And the models are only primed! What your offer then anyway?

This is what you are getting:
2 Boxes of Eldar guardians: Retail 35.00 apeice, sor $70.00
3/4 of a dire avenger box, about $22.50.

Thats $92.50 of primed models, that you want for less than $60.00.

so what is your offer? Do you have an Ideal price in mind?

An offer is just that. You need not be offended by it. You could just write back a turn down and leave it at that. Or you could explain your thoughts on a reasonable offer to see if he is willing to up his offer. Either way is fine. As it been said before it's Bartertown.

If I'm looking to buy or sell than I look at the Online stores for pricing. Thewarstore is good for GW 20%, Flames of war and most other things except for Warmachine which War-path has the best pricing 31-50% off. so look at these first before pricing. Then take condition into consideration then either increase the price (well painted) or decrease the price (assemble, primed, painted badly). And that is not to say that assembled, primed should cost more or less. It all is up to the barter part of the deal. Take me for instance I hate for the models to be assembled, I like to put models together, but if they are I want them to come to me primed. And I love painted models if they are painted well. But I won't even consider buying them if they are painted badly. I would rather buy from a retailer in the case, no matter what.

Thanks for reading my ramblings.

Here's an idea, if someone wants to give you magic beans for your models, don't take them up on it. Or do take them up on it.

Really its all in whether or not you want to accept the deal. If you don't like the terms, tell them thanks but no thanks, and go about your merry way.

Why did this need to be asked about really, except to shame the guy asking for half off?

I wouldn't pay over 50% for anything, ebay or BTown, unless I'm paying for a paintjob.

And therein lies the point. It's called BARTERtown. Negotiation is the name of the game here. There's no reason to take any of this personally unless someone starts throwing insults. Just hang onto your models if you don't want to sell them at the price the other guy offered.

Everyone's looking for their best deal. *shrug*

@kturock
i don't like beans. give me gas.
I will GLADLY make that trade.
You send me all your extra models, and I'll "bottle up" some gas and send it to you... with a complimentary can of air freshener. <G>

Obviously, you don't buy a lot of stuff in new or near-new condition. On those rare occasions that you DO see offers like that, it is more often a scam than not.

I have to agree. The whole point is to come to an agreement for items. You don't have to accept an offer unless you feel it is fair.

I have a bachelor's in economics and part of the classes I took was with regard to trade domestic and int'l. The whole point of a trade system is BOTH parties should feel like they are getting a fair value for their trade.

Here the community notice of the day...lol:

For more information on this concept visit you local library and research the Edge-Worth Box. It's whole concept behind barter and trade.

You never know if you had followed with a counter-offer he might have accepted something at approx 60-65% retail.

I'm sorry, I tried to post earlier and it didn't get through. I admit, I went overboard and got mad. Hwoever, the only reason I asked was to get some feedvack telling me I wasn't the only one. i see lots of evidence that my whole idea of a trading system is how it generally works here, but I had no verbal support. Thats all. Thanks for all your help, I think ive seen enough and can let this topic die.

By the way, I fully support TheDropZone here. Just thought I'd say its as freindly as anyone else. Later.
