"investigation" request for user's address...what

Hi,

Just wondering about a point of etiquette here on bartertown.

I just received a PM which reads:

Hello,
The admin of Btown are conducting an investigation. Recently you had a trade with USERNAME DELETED.

His name and location seemingly match a known banned user.
Could you provide the name and address he provided you for the trade?
Any help would be appreciated.

NAME DELETED
*********

As far as I know, the person who sent this is not an admin or moderator, and has less than 20 trades here. Though I'm not sure how to tell a mod or admin from anyone else here, frankly.

I'd feel like a dolt for swallowing NAME's claim to be part of an investigation from the admins, and blithely violating USERNAME's privacy by providing an address to NAME. I checked the Bad Trader forum and could not find "USERNAME" anywhere.

On the otherhand, I don't want to inadvertently protect a scammer. If there actually is some sort of investigation going on from the admin level, I'd like to help.

Is there a main mod or admin whom I could contact to confirm that this 'investigation' is actually happening?

Do what Peacemystic says.

But if you're looking for a quick answer, just look for the user's name @ the bottom of the main trading page. If it's in blue, they're not. If it's yellow or green, they're a mod.

Dur....I clicked on the 'moderators' link that appears next to each forum title, and there he was.

Heh, heh. Oops. Should have checked a bit more before posting this question I suppose. Thanks for everyone's quick replies though!

Wow, so much for trying to conduct and investigation stealthily.

Next time you get a strange PM like that, send a new Pm to one of the mods/admins..

Well, I did delete all the names involved. I am new here, and I didn't know how to find the mods - hence I posted here in the 'questions' forum about how to do that.

In my defense: on most message boards which I frequent, anyone who is a moderator or admin has their title clearly labeled under their avatar. Since I *didn't* see that under NAME's avatar, I became suspicious.

Judging by the frequency of posts to the bad trader forum, I figured there was *always* one or another investigation going on

But I do sincerely apologize if I've compromised anythign. Now I know who the mods are, I will definitely PM them in the future instead of posting.

In fact, this will be my last post on the matter. I might suggest that the mods delete this thread actually, in case USERNAME hasn't seen it yet.
