Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
What are your thoughts on the new Eldar Codex? Im thinking of playing Eldar again. I have not played 40K in quite awhile. Im not sure what edition, but they had a Craftworld Codex & the "vanilla" Eldar Codex. I ran a mostly foot Eldar army. Two kinds, "vanilla" and Alaitoc Ranger list. (had cool disruption table)
You used to be able to buy a small unit of 5 Guardians & still take a weapon platform.
The lists looked something like this. Just the basics from memory.
Ranger list
Farseer
Guardians/platforms
Rangers
Scorpions
Vypers
War Walkers
Eldar list
Avatar
Scorpions
Guardians/platforms
Hawks
Reapers
Ive been thinking about trying Iyanden. Wraithguard, Wraithblades, Wraithlords, Wraithknight. Whats a Wraithseer? (Wraithlord/Farseer combo??)
Whats your thoughts on the new Eldar Codex?
Experience using it or fighting against it?

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
It's a big upgrade and improvement for them. A lot of units are very useful now, and many 40k players now really, really fear Jetbike Warlock units, Wave Serpents, and oddly, Swooping Hawks.

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
I dont know how my old Eldar army would perform in 6th with a new codex. They were sold off anyway, so im starting from scratch.
Avatar & Scorpions would move to assault.
Guardian brightlances would shoot at tanks.
Reapers would target elite infantry.
Hawks would jump on objectives & thin hordes.
It worked well at my local club.
I might be using an entirely different army now, I have to do more research, check out some army lists.

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
the Wrairhseer is a FW model (rules are in IA: Apocalypse 2013.
basically, it's a wraith lord that cannot be your main HQ with psychic mastery level of 1.
he comes with 3 stock powers:
-one forcing pinning test with -2 LD (pretty good if you have hemlock fighter around)
-one that gives fleet to wraith guards, wriathblades and wraith lord (no wraith knight)
-one that gives FnP(5+) to the aforementioned units above.
he has its place into an Iyanden army but... it's quite expensive, around the same cost that 5 wraith guards with D-scythes.
personally, i would play it in a pure Wraith Army at 2000 pts and over....under that it's quite a waste of points has you need to have another HQ (even if the spirit seers are cheap...)
Actually Hawks are pretty good to kill tanks with their Haywire grenades. if you want to thin down infantry, go with Warp Spiders.
the Jetbike far seer and warlocks is nice, but with Escalation now, they are not that strong (nothing is strong anymore with Escalation, actually.. ) Alos dropping so many points on HQ will thin down the rest of your army and feels that the everything will be based on that unit. In a game where 5/6 missions are objective based, i would go with troops choices first and think about how to support them, after that, i would implant things to deal with specific targets. What's good with the Eldar Codex, is that beside some Aspect Warriors, units are flexible enough to deal with 2 types of targets.
On what you listed:
-The Avatar is nice, but would ne better supporting guardians
-Scorpions are decent assault unit, but i keep thinking they would be better in an ambush/counter assault role
-Guardians with bright lances are good in unit of 20 with 2 bight lances. if you play 10 guardians unit strong, go with shuriken cannon to do more infantry damage.
-Hawks, i see 2 roles for them: objectives contesters and tank hunters
-Reapers are good, but the fire prism is better.
if i was building a Infantry blob army based around the Avatar, i would start around something like that:
Avatar
Farseer
2x20 guardians + 2 bright lances each
1x10 storm guardians, 2 fusions
2x3 Jetbikes
8 Scorpions, exarch, claw, stalker monster hunter
6 Hawks
8 Warp Spiders
Fire Prisms
3 Warwalkers, each with star missile and scatter laser
1850-ish

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
Well I am looking to play an Eldar ranger army with
1 Illic Nightspear
1 Avatar
3 Squads of 10 Rangers with pathfinder
6 Jetbikes
1 Chrimson hunter with exarch, and two starcannons
2 wraithlords with ghostglave, flamer, shuriken catapult, scatter laser, and a bright lance
1 wraithknight with ghostglave, scattershield, and two shuriken cannons
I thought that that would have enough big guys that my jetbikes and rangers could hold objectives and If those Rangers are in cover they have a good cover save.

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
soem questions about your army:
-the Avatar Alone without support is going to die. snipers, especially kroots and Telion led scouts can put him done in 1 turn.
also how do you describe his role into your list.
-3x10 pathfinders gives you a pretty static army overall, and then it's quite easy now to remove cover saves (Tau, D weapons...), i would add more bodis to the army but using 1 or 2 squads of guardians.
-6 jetbikes won't be enough, if you play 1x6, you'll be able to contest/take 1 objective and most of the missions have 5...
-Crimson hunters, don't bother with the exarch, waste of point IMHO.
-Wraithlords: a better built would be 2x bright lances, flamers and ghostglave as your list lacks anti-tank threats.
-Wraithknights: i do not fancy the sword as it's a bit of overkill on a jet MC (hammer of wraith + standard attacks), the base model is probably the best configuration if you play a lone knight as the standard equipment is decent enough to go through a lot of different unit.
Also what's your plan of action? against hordes army? against Tau?

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
I've got a large Iyanden army. I find small squads of Wraithguard in serpents backed up with a FW Avatar (same rules, but more epic looking) and either Wraithknights or Wraithlords and a Fire Prism makes for a pretty brutal list.
Sure, it can be beat, but it is always fun to see space elf zombies overwatch with AP2 flamers that cause instant death on a 6. The wraith knights, if I run them, are generally just the base model. Their upgrades are too many points and in some cases (looking at you, Giant Sword) are almost completely pointless. You also can't even shoot more than two guns, but you can equip it with four for no good reason.
The wraith lords are still quite good, as they can now take two heavy weapons and the sword. I usually run two as a bodyguard for my avatar (OVERKILL).
Also, Dark Reapers can now upgrade their launchers to fire krak missiles. And they can move and fire to full effect. Super killy.

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
Is there such a thing as a "large" Iyanden army? Wraithguard are 30+ points each.
I always thought of Iyanden as a kind of Eldar Terminator army.

I own sixty of the new guys, so yeah there is such a thing. Also why I'm trying to downsize to a more moderate forty.

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
i got 30 of them for my 2000 pts list... the primaris power from the Iyanden giving them battle focus, they are not that slow on the table. add a wave serpent for the D-scythes units and you have a fast, though killing machine...

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
How do you think the Eldar Codex is over all? Ive heard a lot of whining that Tyranids took a hit. ( yeah before its even released.) Been hearing how Tau is powerful. Im wondering where Eldar fall.

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
Quickly Eldar and Tau Allies or vice and versa is one of the strongest build currently. Eldar is still a tricky dex to master but the tools to do it are on the quite good side, there's no units in the book that are really "left on the shelf"

Re: Thoughts on New Eldar Codex??
Eldar and Tau's battle brother status lets you cast fun powers on the stupid Tau. Makes for some very brutal shooting phases.
