I am aware of the first and second rules, but Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk would be an obvious choice for me. I grew up on Tolkien and C.S. Lewis though. Can't count the number of times I have read Hobbit/LOTR/Narnia.

Damn. . .I really need to read C.S. Lewis' stuff. Guess I've been a Tolkien snob for too long.

Palahnuik is good, I have enjoyed his books. Another one that has some dark stuff is Brett Easton Ellis. I read Less than Zero in college as part of a philosophy class. American Psycho is of course one messed up book, for those familiar with the movie the book is far worse. I don't think they could actually make the book into a movie with all the messed up crap. My favorite Easton book is Lunar Park, he throws himself in as a character and begins questioning sanity as characters from his novels begin showing up in his life.
