Red Dawn?

Post by rokassan »

Has anyone heard about this horrid excuse for a remake? In this 2012 version the United States is invaded by...wait for it...North Korea. Not The Soviet Union, Not even China, but North Korea. Now I know I dont have to explain my complete and utter disbelief on the idea behind this as 99.9% of the people on this forum are well above average intelligence. Ill wait for comment to continue expressing my disbelief with the rest of you. I just saw a preview of it on T.V.. Made me sick.

It was supposed to be China, but that didn't go over well, so they had to re-shoot a few scenes, and change a few uniforms. I think it was so they could market the movie over there, too.

Much less believable as North Korea, though. But, to be fair, the original was Cuba and the Soviet Union.

Doesn't need a re make, after seeing the commercial for it it REALLY didn't need a remake. North Korea really? a force from the lost city of Atlantis would've been more believable then them.

I could believe the Soviet Union and its Allies. North Korea cant even feed their own people let alone invade a super power. Yes, the lost city of Atlantis attacking us would be more believable. Hell China wouldnt have a chance. How the heel would they get across the Pacific ocean and through our 7 Super Carrier battle groups that would converge on them? Our Navy is bigger than all the navies in the world combine. How insulting to even make this movie and of course all of our "hero's" are super good looking...no ugly people would know how to survive or be heroic.
The original was a classic and much more plausible. Although from what we know now our military really outclassed the Soviets as well.

Yet more proof that creativity and imagination are lacking in Hollywood. And yet another classic movie that has been remade unnecessarily. (Yeah I'm looking at you too Dredd)

I am of mixed emotions.

Pro:
-It looks as if it will be a well MADE movie (filming, graphics, action, etc).
-Explosions
-The original is genius
-Oh, and explosions. : )

Con:
-North Korea? Really? Who's the overly PC a-hole who was put in charge of THAT decision? Far better off sticking with the original Russian invaders and adding in... darn near ANYONE. even China would've been more believable. Then again, as said, it wouldn't do well for the movie's $bottom line$ to do that. So, while I don't like it, I UNDERSTAND it. As has been said, even China wouldn't be able to do it. So, if I'm suspending disbelief, I can suspend it taht much further.

-Why even bother? The original, while highly dated, was a GREAT -and is still a VERY GOOD- movie.

I expect I'll see it, but I'll probably wait for video or, like I usually do anyway, if I go to the theater, I'll go to a matinee.

One thing to consider... I'd wager that many of you decrying the unbelievability of North Korea invading us LOVED the movie about the team of a 1940's superhuman man who fought occult Nazis, the guy who built a flying suit of armor, the guy who turns green and HUGE when he's mad, and the Norse God who team up to fight the other Norse God (they're brothers, of course) and his alien minions. : )

Yea, but those are super hero movies. We don't care if they're fantastical. That's the point. This remake, on the other hand, would like it if we could suspend our disbelief and see this situation as something that could happen. And let's face it, no one, except maybe some tinfoil hat types who have been sitting in the sun wearing aforementioned hats too long, could suspend disbelief to the point where North Korea invading the States even seems remotely possible. Heck, when it comes right down to it I'd probably believe in the possibility of Ironman before I believed in the possibility of North Korea invading the US.

There was a movie on one of the cable channels called the "Tomorrow, when the War Began". It was Red Dawn but set in Austraila and the North Koreans invaded........I have watched a lot of bad movies. But I couldn't do this one......I think that the Red Dawn Redoo would be even worse.....

I think what they did was go to this page on Wikapedia...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... _personnel

Sort it by active military strength.
First number Active / Second Reserve
By these numbers it does seem plausible.

#1 China 2,285,000 - 800,000
#2 USA 1,458,219 - 1,458,500
#3 India 1,325,000 - 2,142,821
#4 North Korea 1,106,000 - 8,200,000
#5 Russian Federation 1,027,000 - 754,000

Look at that reserve military strength. That means... has some sort of military training and is armed. That's pretty scary.

If they mobilized their entire military in secret and somehow got them over here...yikes

And maybe us Canadians helped them...Beware the Leaf...We are sneaky.

Makes it more believable when you put that out there.

I will fo into it like Total Recall. Knowing it probably will not be as good, but enjoy it for what it is.

All they did was look at numbers. Not their economy, military production capability, airlift capacity, naval strength, military technology, ability to supply their troops, raw materials to manufacture weapons. North Korea lacks all of this by a looooooong shot. How about go back to 1984 and just redo a Warsaw Pact VS. NATO senario? How about another Aliens invade us movie...not North Korea.
In the end the worst part is there are plenty of empty headed morons in this country that believe this could happen."Dude North Korea has a big army, They are tough".
Makes me sick.

The only really relevant consideration from your list is airlift capacity.

All the rest is about WINNING a war, not conducting an INVASION.

A variety of daring military actions of an inferior party vs a superior have brought victory to the weaker side--similarly, a variety of bold attacks have resulted in ignominious defeat.

China is of course more believable than N. Korea--but it is certainly believable that, with sufficient airlift ability, N. Korea could deposit enough troops in the western US to make things very uncomfortable for the people living there. Airlift also becomes simpler if the trip is one-way.

Follow up:

I just re-watched the trailer....

So yeah, the invasion is a little more comprehensive than I imagined. Clearly, it would take China to develop some sort of high-tech EMP bomb-thingee.

This could have been a better movie, I guess.

But, OTOH, let's hand-wave the background to the war and go right to the part where desperate American kids fight an organized army!
