Is there an easy way to search your PMs?

Post by Imaginos »

Is there an easy way to search your PMs? Rather than looking through each PM (or set of PMs since they thread together), is there an easy way to enter a search term to find it in my PMs? Like I want to find "storm raven" in my PMs, is there an easy way to do that?

not yet. Rap-master Plarz is working on it, as it was a staff request as well.. it IS in the cards, but unknown when.

I feel your pain..
2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

If you don't have your Location listed in your User Control Panel, why not take a second and update it? It will let your trading partners know where you are from the beginning.

I use the Unofficial Porkuslime Trading Guidelines - if you have way less refs.. you ship first.

Folks I am awaiting a ref from.. Zack

This is a annoying problem, but you can search in a way. (Assuming you use windows.. don't know how it works on a Mac) If you press ctrl then press F your computer will bring up a little search engine at the bottom of the screen. That search button will search for the word you typed in everywhere on the screen. It does not search into your PM's, but if you open a PM, and then use this to search, it should work. Thanks!

Also, when we DO get it, you can expect it to be a "Bartertown Plus Member only" option.

Why? This function is pretty basic, and would be helpful to all on the site.

- A simple 'not interested' to a trade offer is just being polite. It helps people setting up multiple trades know where they stand.
- Google something for someone, they get an answer. Teach someone how to Google their own answer, they own the Internet.

A fairly easy way to search PMs is to export them as XML.

The option is at the bottom of the page.

1. Export view as XML
2. Save file to desktop (as data.xml by default)
3. Open .xml file (opens in IE by default)
4. ctrl-f for search

It only does one page at a time, but it does the entire message.

Because BT+ members support the site and help us keep it running. Their membership dollar$ help us pay for better hosting and equipment. They deserve extras that people who don't support the site financially don't get.

Every upgrade would be helpful to everyone on the site. That doesn't mean they'll all get it.

I still say it is basic functionality, and should be available to all. This would help all users who need to file back-outs / bad trades / history with other members.

I agree the B+ members should get extras - and they do. But something like this should be open to all.

Even non-B+ members support the site. We do word of mouth advertising (both in person, and on other forums), and some non-B+ members got T-shirts to support the site (at least we paid, no shirt as of yet).

Word of mouth advertising gets us more members. That increases our costs. As you can see, the vast majority of members (especially new ones) do not sign up for BT+.
The shirts, once everyone who's ordered them has paid for them, will only slightly support the site. We'll get a few bucks per shirt (like $5, tops). That helps, but it doesn't work wonders. I'm not tracking them, but I think there were only about 20ish shirts ordered. Right? That does not do a ton of upgrading.

As we introduce extras, there will be some available to all and some available to only BT+. In general, the "coolest" ones will be BT+ only. For only $25 per calendar year, you can get those functionalities as they become available, as well.

I just wish B+ either was amortized based on when you sign up, or carried from YY Month to YY+1 Month. I know it is more hassle to do this, but it might get more people to sign up later in the year.

I'll join B+ after they do that AND make the server stable.
