Squat Army = Imperial Guard?

Post by starslayer »

I havent played 40K since last edition, so Im sure things have changed. I have aquired around 300 old GW Squats. (Space Dwarves) About 200+ plastic troopers and 100+ metals. I was thinking of using them as Imperial Guard under the current rules. Do you think that is a close equivalent? The troopers have lasguns & light armor. There also some old shoulder mounted heavy weapons.

Here are some of my ideas:
Plenty of neat metals for HQ & Command sections.
Use newer Cadian heavy weapons with Squats as crew.
Some Lasgun troops can have a special weapon instead. (flamer, melta , plasma)
Lasgun plastic Squats as Troops.
Hearthguard as Stormtroopers or Veterans.
Bikes as Roughriders. (add lance arms)
Trikes as Sentinels.
Tanks.

I even have some Living Ancestors & Guildmasters I could use as Psykers. I have a few Squats with bolters, bolt pistols- but that doesnt seem like a common option for IG. I even have some heavy Exo-armor Squats. (Marines or Terminators)

Guard is the best, most natural fit, since Squats are equipped with Lasguns and Imperial weaponry.

Your pairings sound good to me--if you have the adventurers and pirates, those can serve as Veteran and Penal Squads respectively. I like dropping the exo troopers in as Grey Knight allies, myself.

Living Ancestors & Guildmasters can be used as about any of the HQ choices, really. Of course, they'd work for psykers, too.

For the Exo Armor squats... How about Ogryn? Just mount them on dynamic 40mm bases that make them a bit taller. The extra armor will explain why they are so tough, and why they take up extra spaces in a vehicle.
I'd be interested to see what you did with vehicles, too. Would you shorten them at all? What about Sentinels? Would you try to find a way to convert one as a pilot, or just enclose the cabin? If you enclose the cabin, you can have one hanging out of a hatch on top, a la chewbacca.

I'm not going to really convert the vehicles. I'm going to have Squats as crew & possibly some Whfb dwarf bits.

I like the trikes for sentinels, and MM's suggestion of exo armour Ogryns.

The old Egg Sentinels would be a nice vintage touch as well.

You might try rolling in some OOP Rhinos instead of Chimeras, since they were issued to old school Squats (and everyone else).
