My Random Rant
We've all seen it. Some of us have done it: Placed an ad here telling to world that we need to sell our beloved minis and games.
And the reason?
MY WIFE/GIRLFRIEND TOLD ME TO.
Does this not make your blood boil?
Nothing is worse than living with a woman that does not understand your obsessions.

Re: My Random Rant
I dont ask her to play wargames and she doesn't ever ask me to watch Dancing with the Stars, The Real Housewives of "Insert town here", or any combination of Wife Swap that show with 19 kids or Sister Wives. And if she wants to DVR something when Walking Dead comes is being DVR'd Walking Dead wins out. I dont ask to DVR many shows so when its one of my shows it wins. Its all about the compromise.
The only restrictions she puts on my hobby is that I can't blow the budget with spending so I usually save up and sell stuff off to buy other things.

Re: My Random Rant
For me, it really depends on the circumstances.
Need to free up room and the wife put her foot down? I get it. I have to do the same thing with my wife in regards to shoes and purses every year or 2.
"No You can only keep 5 purses and 12 pair of shoes. The rest have to go... AND YOU CANNOT GIVE ANYTHING MORE THAN ONE PAIR OF TENNIS SHOES TO OUR DAUGHTER!"
Yes. I have made that statement before.
So, I get it.
"Get rid of that gaming crap!" Nah. That doesn't sit with me... but I get it for space reasons.
On the other hand, if money's tight, she shouldn't HAVE to ask you to sell the stuff off. A real man has his trade ad written before the idea even strikes her.
And yes; many years ago, in leaner times, I HAVE been that guy.

Lower rating? You ship first.
Give me a sense of humor Lord. Give me the grace to see a joke.
To get some humor out of life and pass it on to other folk.
I think what this situation needs is some imagination.

Wife and I agree that at this point I have no gaming budget. So I got creative and figured out that if I sell my M:TG and minis that I dont need/want I can put that towards getting what I want to get and it wont effect our bills budget. Plus if I make a good deal on a lot I can throw some towards bills and make the wife happy that I spend so much time online lol.

Re: My Random Rant
Yeah i was that guy not too long ago also. Since everyone around me that played moved away my mini's were for nothing but display. I do have to admit that sometimes I would make my dwarfs and Lizardmen fight it out in gladiator style battles by myself. Money got tight and I needed a new computer for work so I sold everything off. Made enough money to buy a new computer and toss some dollars towards bills also. My wife didn't make me I just thought it was for the best.
Now I understand the original posters frustration though because I had friends whose wives nagged them about spending so much on mini's when they made good money and weren't in debt. In those cases there usually is some underlying issue and the mini's is just an outlet.

This. My wife completely understands expensive hobbies and we both participate in each other's. Fortunately for me, hers that involves expenses is homebrewing, so we both get to reap the rewards from that (just finished a batch of stout, and have some dry mead that will be sitting for another 5+ months in our secondary carboy).MagickalMemories wrote:On the other hand, if money's tight, she shouldn't HAVE to ask you to sell the stuff off. But, neither of us would force the other to drop theirs, and both would be willing to give something up if necessary.
True, we love life, not because we are used to living but because we are used to loving. There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.

Re: My Random Rant
My wife is a saint...She puts up with my hobby spending and the sprawl of my collection. She does hint every now and then that my collection is starting to creep out of the designated hobby friendly rooms of our house if it does, or lately it is "You know we could buy a new {random high priced home appliance} if you sold an army." (bats eyelashes) She isn't really serious, more hopeful than anything.
Then again she knows if she demanded that I sell my toys,
1: It would never happen and
2: She couldn't buy any toys herself.
A happy wife makes for a happy life.
Let her buy stuff she wants so she will leave you alone.
As for MMs comments. If it was needed and money was tight; be the man and bite the bullet. (Just sell the good stuff last!)

Re: My Random Rant
I went through this about 6 years ago when I moved in with my wife and she threw a fit that I was spending too much time painting so I stopped completely. Now I do what I want. Screw her.

Re: My Random Rant
I currently am "that guy". My workplace cut my hours by more than 50%, so the toys are being swapped for utility bills and mortgage payments. She didn't ask, and didn't need to. She is really pretty tolerant of my hobbies. The only times she has gotten after me a bit is when I was shipping out tons of trades each week. It was eating into the budget and she got tired of all the DC# slips piling up by the computer

Re: My Random Rant
Thanks for all the replys.
I think I get frustrated because selling your miniatures is a temporary solution. How far do you think the money will go? You will never get back nearly as much as you paid for them in the first place.
For example: A member of our gaming group is selling off his Warmachine army to fund a trip to visit his father in the hospital. I'm shocked that he is willing to resort to such measures. His collection isn't very big and won't get him far.

Re: My Random Rant
Yep, sometimes you need that short-term band-aid to get through a tight spot. I have sold most of my gaming stuff at around 50% retail, which is a little painful for sure. However, the bank/gas company/grocery store don't care how many Titans or Sisters of Battle I have, so I do what I have to in order to make ends meet while I try to hunt down a second job (or full time replacement). It also made me realize just how much money I have sank into my hobbies, which makes me blanche a bit.
Your friend who is selling his WM to visit his father sounds like he values the family relationship more than his hobby, which is, quite frankly, noble. A person can always get more toys once their troubles have passed.

Re: My Random Rant
I have sold books and other gaming stuff that have been dear to my heart since I was a small child in order to pay bills. When the time came and we needed money, I sat down and made up a list and told her about it without her having to ask. And yes, I chose what I thought would go for the most money rather than what I "just didnt use anymore".
I have not been asked to sell them just for the hell of it though. I police my "space" on my own and box up or sell/trade off what I dont use on my own.
Things I HAVE been asked to get rid of or sell "just for the hell of it" are old photos. THAT upset me. My past is part of my life and what has made me who I am today. Just because I have pictures of me with my exes stashed in a box in storage in the basement does not mean that I get them out to reminence about old times, it means I am proud of who I am now and want to remember what made me who I am and to pass "my life" down to future generations.
