PO lost my shipment, not insured. Whats the Btown protocol?

Post by farseer »

Hello Btown

I have recieved the package sent fromt he other party. My package to him had delivery confirmation and no insurance. Tracking it shows delivered to the correct zip code (USPS wont tell me anything else due to privacy issues) but other party says he does not have it. I opened a claim with usps, but my local office called back saying there was nothing he could do because it was delivered in Chicago. He stated that the claims dept forwards these issues to the home PO (sending). That makes no sense at all as they have no control of the shipping end of the shipment.

Whats protocol here? I 've never run into this issue in over 10 years on Btown. Its certainly not my fault, but I dont want to leave the other party out to dry and I dont want to be out either...

I have asked him to check with neighbors as the address had a "Unit A". Perhaps a neighbor got it.

Typically, if you got a DC# and it shows as having been delivered, you did your part. It's your job to ensure the package arrives, and USPS says it did.

Your trade partner needs to visit his local USPS, ask to speak with someone in charge, and tell him the issue. He needs to ask the guy to speak with the mail carrier. A lot of time, they leave the package with a neighbor or at the rental office, etc.
The neighbor forgets, the office presumes they're picking it up... you get the idea.

Something I didn't realize is that your receipts actually have records of where you shipped, so I'd call that proof.

Also, after a few things getting lost in the mail, I make it a policy to insure everything worth more than about $15

He's lieing. " He stated that the claims dept forwards these issues to the home PO (sending)."
D/C says it was delivered. As far as USPS is concerned, it was delivered. Also there no longer is s a claims dept. With down-sizing, certain people handle claims, in an area. Usually the most experienced clerk, maybe a supervisor.

If it's lost, then it gets back tracked, if there's a d/c or insurance. No number, no tracking.

If it was damaged then the delivery office, receiver, would handle it.

The only way the sending office would handle it, is if it never showed it left the office. The only scan shows it was there.

You also see the importance insurance.

It's up to him to do like MM said. Go to, or call his delivery office and talk to the supervisor &/or the carrier that delviered it, to see if he/she recalls where he put it.

thank you for the replies and the guidance. Im in uncharted territory and want to be sure it gets resolved within "protocol". Lets see what the PO comes up with locally to the reciever.

KT-
Thanks for posting. I remember our discussions about the PO vs UPS. I was thinking of pming you about this. The PO manager that called me from my local office was less than helpful and seemed very bothered that he even had to call me. After telling me multiple times that he could not help me and not offering any recommendations, I had to pry the Chicago local office phone number from him. He gave me it and said "good luck, i dont even know if that number is any good anymore" and got off the phone. So far the number rings and no one answers, no message either...

I can't comment on his attitude, it speaks for itself.

USPS no longer has a master list of phone numbers for offices. It never actually had a list, but there was a way to call someone to ask someone else.
The numbers used to be public information. No longer. Like alot of govenrment agencies, they're no longer listed. There isn't any answering machines or services anymore. You won't find the number online either. Best you can do is try directory asistance for that city, which will have a fee, or check usps.com and use 'find locaions'. Type in his city, state & zip. Hopefully you can figure out which is the correct office. Ask for the delivery office of his exact zip code.
