lol, some of the stuff on here is classic...

i have turned down items on price and had responses of "do you want it for free?" but honestly retail value is very subjective. for games we can go to miniature market and get things at like 42% off MSRP any day of the week brand new. and if we spend $100 (which is super easy when you look at prices today) we get free shipping AND dodge taxes. if i am buying something used i like to make it worthwhile as saving $3 isnt worth losing the thrill of opening that brand new toy packaging. you can say anything you want about why i am not right... but at any time i have full access to those prices no matter who i am. they are an online RETAIL store.

of course when this is what the standard is, its hard to value your own stuff at a fair price because then you just end up getting the short end everywhere you turn.

Don't get me wrong. I agree with much of what you've said.
The only things you get 42% off on at MMkt, though, is their uber-clearance or damaged stuff.

thats not true, almost every boardgame is 42% off (i do a LOT of boardgames) but i took a look and yes as miniatures go it seems to be 25%, in my own case i have a services barter arrangment with a local game store so my miniatures purchases are closer to 45% off retail... but even so a LOT of stuff on here i have seen for sale for the same price as online retail. its common knowledge that those prices exist and its easy enough to get free shipping so that price really should be more of the standard we work from. and if your stuff is OOP then yes this is all out the window!

It boggles my mind when I see something listed for more than its going for online, especially if its assembled and basecoated. I assume they paid retail for it a their FLGS?

I can't believe stores still do that. Even my notoriously cheap FLGS has gone to 20% off to compete with teh interwebs..

The only two hobby shops in the Tucson, AZ area don't offer ANY discounts at all. Unfortunately, that means that I don't go to either all that often. :(
I do believe that both have bins of old, opened stuff that is cheaper. But no discounts. So, there might be more traders here than you think that paid full price for their items...

I play board games occasionally, but I tend to get them here in trade. I don't buy them new very often. So, because I don't know, I went to MiniMkt and looked.
I checked 3 of their New Products in board games and the first 4 FFG games (randomly chose FFG). The New games went from around 32% to 39% off, and the FFG were all right at a standard 35% off. That's still a high percentage, but short of the 42%. Like I said, though, that was a random sample. I don't know where you saw the 42%.

All that being said, typically, 25% -with the occasional 30%- is the best you're going to find regularly, as far as minis go. You're fortunate that you have that special arrangement with the store, but yours is not a typical relationship. You are bartering services for the ability to purchase at (or nearly at) their wholesale cost. That is an abnormality.

As for assembled and primed models selling for retail or more... I wouldn't pay it, but I have friends who will see that as a valuable investment. If it's well assembled and cleanly primed, it's that much work THEY don't have to do. Some see it as 'part of the hobby," but others just see it as something they've got to spend time on.

And that really is a core problem. We (gamers) tend to buy a lot of figs, and like everyone who buys en masse, doing so as cheaply as possible is desirable. Yet we need toe camaraderie/fellowship/exposure to COOL NEW! that the game store provides, plus free tables to play on.

I try to buy locally, but not stupidly. And I would never (ok, barely ever) pay full retail at a GW store.
I am always in the market for weird and wonderful GW oddbitz and ephemera. PM me if you have something old/weird/rare.

I can play a game, at my house, while drinking beer and smoking a cigar..

Don't forget used gaming things are big too. (Hello!)

Shops are going to have to compete with the internet, or close.

I can't imagine a store staying open based on gaming alone. My FLGS makes its bread on CCGs and comics.

the FLGS here has been around about 30 years. He sells comics primaraily, but CCG's, pathfinder and clix are the biggest gaming.. 40k comes and goes.

He does sell on ebay, usually only high dollar comics and collectibles. They just sold a comic for $50k. 1 of the guys is flying there to deliver it. [so he says.]
I know they sold 1 a couple weeks ago for $38k. I so the paperwork from usps. [it was delivered slower than expected and there was a panic, even though it went registered & insured. They should've asked me about the time schedule, but didn't. ;-) ]

He's the only game in town. The area isn't and has never been big enough to support more than 1 gaming store or club store. The population that buys gaming, primarily up thru college or at a military base, just aren't in this area.

Now, boating, hunting, fishing stores..they're everywhere.

What do I expect?

I expect the person will make the items sound better then they are.
I expect the person selling is trying to max out their cash (and why not).
I expect some of the long timers here to forget what it felt like to be the newbie.
I expect the next person to rip me off will not be one of the newbies. (The first wasn't)
However, I expect that most of the people on here are honest and just trying to sell or buy game stuff.
I expect that ebay has changed forever the price expectations here on Bartertown.

So what do I expect? Well to be honst, not much.

I find that if I keep my expectatiosn low I am often quite happy with the final outcome.

I'm going to insist that I receive payment before shipping, and I will ship however you like with a lot of protection in place for miniatures. Paypal pretty much protects you from getting ripped off, so its really a no brainer.

-----------------------
Stuff like that always gives me a giggle.

Also " Dont low-ball me!".
But they dont have any mention of price. How do I know what you consider a low offer?
