Dreadfleet recalled and to be destroyed

Post by kturock »

Sea of Claws is a yahoo group for Man O War. They posted that BoardGameGeek has posted that GW is recalling all sets of Dreadfleet and destroying them, considering them a disasterous release.
I'll call my flgs today and see what they know.

Anyone see anything about this?
Supposedly it was on GW's blog but then disappeared.
Heh, I was called a Grognard. ;-)

Sounds like an angry yahoo group showing their displeasure on a release that did not update their game system.

I remember it being on the GW blog that January 31st was the last day you could order it and seeing an Internet rumor that GW was pulling the stock back from their stores, but nothing on a full recall.
By trading with me you agree that all signature based trade rules are not in force. If it isn't in the PM thread then it doesn't apply.

I'll ask my FLGS about it I know they have like 3 boxes still on the shelf. They sold about 8 copies.

One of the area FLGS's has about 3 copies left. They sell one every week or 2.
A lot of people say great things about it. I haven't seen anything negative (granted, I haven't looked).

I can see GW recalling them, just to keep them as limited. I do not see GW recalling them due to failure - just look at Finecast.

- A simple 'not interested' to a trade offer is just being polite. It helps people setting up multiple trades know where they stand.
- Google something for someone, they get an answer. Teach someone how to Google their own answer, they own the Internet.

Dakka has a very long thread on the matter- basically, the consensus (besides "we don't like GW" and "they didn't have realistic expectations") is that they're probably doing it to

1-artificially limit supply (since it didn't sell well, they'd prefer to sell fewer copies and eventually have a decent collector's market)
2- destroy it to write it off as a loss (also, see 1)

I've done work with someone who started up a second company, which failed pretty hard, but because of tax writeoffs, actually netted them about the same as if they hadn't lost the money in the failed venture.

Having a decent collectors market does nothing for GW, unless they later release the supply they have on hand in 1's and 2's over a course of years. Doubtful with them. They're looking for the quick sell.
Plus, GW corporate has already made all the money they are going to off of the sold units. No reason to recall them and pay the stores back what they paid GW corporate for 'em. With that in mind, it doesn't make sense to recall them at all, much less recall and destroy them.

Destroyed is how they get their tax break or whatever, and they (as far as I understand) are only recalling from franchises, not (F)LGSs, so there's no money they're refunding there.

Or, at least, that's how I understand it.

What's the reason for the recall? Any given?

I believe that officially there was no recall, and that this was leaked by some GW employee. (Again, from what I've read)

I talked to my FLGS. He said he hasn't heard about this. They buy directly from GW. They only have 1 copy left and will keep it anyway.

I posted that on the Sea of Claws Yahoo Group.
I got a reply "GW can't recall from a FLGS, only their hobby centres...".

My reply was, just another way GW doesn't support their retailers.

Out of curiosity, why isn't this in WHFB or misc. fantasy?
