WTF? - Pissy at Paypal! <RANT>

Post by BITZJUNKIE »

So.....

I logged into paypal to enter a personal tabbed “payment owed” to make a payment on paypal, and when I get to the confirmation screen, I see that I’m being charged for the transaction  .

I unchecked the “I’ll pay this fee” box and saw that the seller will now pay the fee. What gives??

So......

I dumped the transaction and started over as a “gift” under the personal tab again, and the same thing occurs. Fees on a “gift”? Are you kidding me paypal?? Every time I have “gifted” or made “payment owed” payments since forever, they have been free.

I’ll be honest and be happy to admit that a few transactions over the last year have been made to help keep the full amount of payment in a seller’s pocket when I’ve bought something here on BT.

I also KNOW it’s a cost of doing business to some degree or other, but when I start to wonder why paypal can’t seem to back up a bad transaction (had a couple past issues from feebay), I am at a complete loss as to why I want to keep doing business with them... where are ALL those fees going (rhetorical)??

Corporate greed and this economy have crossed my line of death - is this the end of paypal for me?

Are there any other options for online payments that will not nickel and dime you to death AND are reputable??

I have sent as gift a few times in the last couple days. I have not seen that.

Do you have a business account? That would be the only difference I see (I have just a plain personal account - dropped the business one when they started charging me for stupid stuff like that)

I was wondering what everyone was talking about when they say make sure it's a gift, because i noticed someone ALWAYS had to pay either way. I had upgraded to a business account way back, when it was a benefit to have one. I didn't even know that thee was a possibility for actually getting a transaction for free.

HOW were you paying, BJ?

I send as Personal Payment (gift, etc.) all the time. The only time there's a fee involved is if (a) I'm paying via my attached line of credit (I have a LOC through PayPal) or (b) an attached credit card. If you want it to be fee free, you've got to pay with your PayPal balance.
There might also be fees for sending internationally. I don't recall.

A little elaboration is in order:

I went to pay an amount of $70.00 and was charged $2.33. I don't mind gifting the amount at all and it was a perfectly smooth trade and a great trader to deal with... but before anyone starts:

It's not the money, it's the principle of the thing

My business account is linked directly to a checking / savings account and set to draw from said account if there aren't enough funds available after it draws directly from paypal funds. Today, I had about $25 on payapl and the remainder ($45-ish) would be pulled from the savings account.

There has never been a fee associated with a gifted transaction, but there was a check box next to the fee line when there wasn't any before today. In this case, the amount of $2.33 was listed on that line item and the box was checked. I unchecked the box and a small window appeared and stated that the recipient would pay for the transaction otherwise  . A complete shocker to me!

Has anyone tried to log onto ttheir accounts today and see if it appears on a transaction?

Just tried it myself, no fee for doing it as a gift. Might be businesses can't gift without fees now???

Exactly what I'm wondering....

I do have a purchase on ebay that I just tried to pay for and I'm getting an error when I go to pay with paypal. Heck, I can't even get into paypal at this time either. Won't be looking into this again untiol later it seems.

Patience is a virtue though... so I'll try again later.

It's because of your balance. Since all of the funds were not available in PayPal, a fee was assessed. It's because they can exchange the money between accounts pretty easily, but there's an extra cost for them to transfer it from OUTSIDE PayPal.

My account is a business account (at the time that I got my debit card, it was the only way you could get one for your account), and this is how it ALWAYS works on mine. To avoid the fees, you could set up the difference as a transfer to your PayPal balance, THEN send the payment.

From what I have read, you have to keep a positive balance in your Paypal account in order not to get pay fees.

Not exactly correct.
You have to have a positive balance *and* the money you're sending has to come from that positive balance in it's entirety. if any part of the money you send comes from somewhere other than the PayPal balance, there will be a fee paid by SOMEONE.

Speaking of corporate greed, I read a little piece on minimum wage and corporate salaries. It stated that if minimum wage kept pace with what these corporate *mod edit - crass language* are making it would be $23.00 and hour in the United States. How ya like them apples. Big business is what is ruining the American way of life and our economy. Greedy *edit* megalomaniacs.

Edited by HZ for crass language.
