Shipping large terrain lots? Shippin cost advice wanted.

Post by smilbuta »

Hello ,
Im planning on offering up a large lot of terrain.

For anyonw who has shipped large items/low weight, what advice or complications have you had.

What is the cheapest way to send this, it weighs no more than 15lbs. Foamboard construction.

This is a shot of the terrain to give you an idea of quantity and volume.

USPS also has an oversize charge, for boxes that can't be sorted on machines and need to sorted by hand.

Best you can do is sell locally or close enough to drive.

I paid $25 shipping on a box that weighed under 10 pounds but was 3'x3'x4'. [Haloclix vehicle] ANd that was cheap because it got a discount for only travelingunder 200 miles.

The cheapest way will probably be USPS Parcel Post. Sometimes, you can get an upgrade to Priority for less than a buck, depending on the weight. Your most likely bet will be Parcel Post, though.
Based on weight, you won't have a HUGE charge. Where you'll see the issue, as has been addressed, will be with the package size. You'll pay a premium for that...and breaking it into multiple boxes won't really work. Shipping would end up costing more.

As for the weight; you can expect it to be closer to 20 lbs when you're done. You've got to add in the weight of the box itself, as well as the packaging materials (and this will require a LOT of packing materials).

Well did some tests and was able to get all the terrain Minus Building 3 in a box 20x20x18 for 18lbs. Using bubble wrap to hold it in place. USPS is looking like $30 plus delivery conf + Insurance... approx $37....if I did the little web price widget right.

That seems like a lot of terrain or one box. Make sure you're protecting it like CRAZY. If it jumbles around at ALL, you're looking at breakage.
