Counts as GW models 40K army questions

Post by psychobob »

I'm contemplating creating an Imperial Guard army but using non-vehicle models from another company. My question is to everyone If you were at your FLGS would you play an oponent in a game of 40K if they were using infantry models from another company if it was well painted, well thought out and you could easily tell each troop choice and weapon choice from one another? I would still use heavy weapons, vehicles and rulesets from GW. I would like to make a flavorful force with some models that I really find well sculpted but I wanted to get peoples thoughts first before I dabble in a bit of lunacy. Of course I would never be able to play this in a GW store or a GW sanctioned tournament.

Thanks for your thought!

Without hesitation.

I myself have a variety of proxy IG armies on the build, using miniatures from the iKore Void line, the old Warzone line, and the Wargames Factory Shock Troops.

So long as the gear load outs are clear, I see no problem at all.
I am always in the market for weird and wonderful GW oddbitz and ephemera. PM me if you have something old/weird/rare.

Agreed with sorrow. As long as I can tell what it is, feel free to use it. War Elephant is a Leman Russ (guy with machine guns on top pointing to the sides for Sponsons) - sweet!

If you don't want to play me due to non-GW models, I probably don't want to play against you anyways.

Abstitively posolutely!! And what's more, I'm in Northern VA, so possibly close enough to do it. I went the reverse route with my SoB army. My infantry are all GW, but almost all my vehicles are not.

I'm thinking about doing it for sure now. It would just take a while to build up everything since I'd be doing it in smaller chunks. Like a squad a month.

I would have no problem at all with it. Imperial Guardsmen are drafted from untold millions of worlds, and vehicles come from hundreds if not thousands of Forge worlds in lots of different patterns, and I'm not entirely sure every vehicle does come from a forge world. Even the Departmento Munitorium would be very hard-pressed to enforce hard-and-fast troop/vehicle patterns. Using other models just reinforces the idea as far as I'm concerned.

I -personally- don't use counts-as proxies, but only because I play or run a lot of sanctioned tournaments. But way back when I was a starving college student, I started with Space Rangers standing in for Space Marines.

So yeah, other than the whole sanctioned tournament limitation, absolutely! After all, those AT43 and Alkemy minis have to have something to keep them busy in their retirement.

I guess it is more up to the store in question than the player- I recently found out why there is so much internet hostility towards GW stores/employees. We just moved closer to DC, so I took the opportunity to go up to one of the GW stores with my SW army. The army is fully painted and has some nice conversions. I wanted to try out a Thunderwolf Cav Lord and I had purchased one of the microart studios minis- very nice. Anyhow, I am unpacking my army and the GW manager is checking out the minis and telling me how great they are and we are having a good ole time. I set out an old slayer dwarf I use as my chooser of the slain- I mean what good space viking is without their trusty dwarf smith right? Anyhow, he picks it up and says "what is this?" I say, he is a old model a friend of mine gave me I use as a chooser, I said, I think it is a Ral Partha mini (turns out is was one of the first GW slayers). He turns to me and says "you know you can't use this". I am a bit thrown off, so I laugh and comment on how it is essentially just a marker. Meanwhile the other manager comes over and says "No, our regional manager was just here the other day, we cannot allow any non GW models to be used in any games on our boards". At that point I bring out my new TWC lord and say "I guess I can't use this either huh?" in which I get a nod. Meanwhile, I have been at the store twice for games playing against no less than 5 unpainted armies against guys who only know the rules that benefit their armies. It is clear where the stores priorities lay. Since, then I have been getting numbers to try and lure some of the older players over to the house for games.

Yup. That's been a rule for years.

I got away with using a WM blast template for a few games, but they hassled me about it (I get the impression that they were more laid back than many employees, while trying to follow company rules).

It's why I support the FLGS, and why I used to the majority of the time, even when there was a GW near my house.

I expect honesty about models' conditions, thank you.

If I don't respond in a day or two, please check back, I've forgotten-sorry.

Model has to be 50% GW. You can argue and try and bend the rule a bit for Thunderwolves. If you use a GW marine and a custom TW you can say that the marine is half and the TW the other half. You are also aloud to use your conversions so the TW can be a conversion. There is a lot of wiggle room in that rule.

Hey, I've still got a box of those Space Rangers. Have a friend here in VA who uses them for his DA army as well.

Forgot to mention my other 'proxy' army in my earlier post. IG army using Lizardmen models and turtle shells for the tanks. And I've used it in GW GTs.

That's because you ran the events:) . Point is, I think GW should be worried about the hobby as a whole not whether someone has 4 models in their army that isnt GW plastic. The one thing the other mini companies dont have is GW's storyline which I would say is the best in the business.
