Good question and one I asked someone recently. I am going to refrain from voting due to lack of experience, but I look forward to the answers.

Never used the Privateer paints before. I like the Reaper colors and consistency better than the Vallejo. For me the Vallejo just seems too thin.

You know, it's really not fair to have a discussion about miniature paints without including GW and maybe "generic craft paints" there are people who swear by (and/or at) both of those.
By trading with me you agree that all signature based trade rules are not in force. If it isn't in the PM thread then it doesn't apply.

I went P3 as they are my second favorite. My favorite is not included in the poll: Foundry.

I've tried all but the Vallejo and I still prefer GW over all of them. Especially the foundation paints and washes. I do turn to Reaper more than the others for color palette expansion and the nice flow and tooth of the paint. I like the feel of the P3, but too many of them come out "waxy".

Reaper master series for me, though I do like GW foundation paints.

Re: What is your favorite brand of Miniatures Paint?
I apologize for not being clearer.
I'm specifically trying to get a feel for how these 3 specific paints stack up against each other in popularity. This is why no others were included.

Re: What is your favorite brand of Miniatures Paint?
"Finish" or "tooth" or "grain" (pick your term) of a paint is a large determining factor for many painters. I prefer the smooth "waxy" finish of Foundry/P3 to anything. It took me a long time and many miniatures to come to that preference. Lots of influence from the McVeys in there as well. After watching Ali work with it and explain why it works for her techniques I became a believer.
Paint: Foundry/P3/GW/Vallejo (VMC)
Inks/washes: GW/Windsor Newton/Higgins
Metallics: GW
Mediums: Vallejo/GAFA/Liquitex
Brushes: Winsor Newton Series 7's (full size)
That's my paint tool box. Items listed in order of preference.

Yes, GW for me mostly too. I have a few Humbrol, Howard Hues (flesh tone set), and so on, but mostly I like GW and water them down.
I didn't much like Vallejo when I dabbled in them, and haven't used the others. GW Foundations, inks and washes especially I like best. Their coloured metallics (yes I still have those!) are also good.

I swear by Reaper Master Series. I love the triad format. I have a poor eye for color and hue, so trying to mix colors kills me.

Re: What is your favorite brand of Miniatures Paint?
I like Vallejo and the P3 paints. Mainly due to the fact that the can be stored a lot longer than GW paints and I get more for my dollar. Never tried foundry. Tried reaper, but the product reminded me of the tempra paints I used in elementary school.

Re: What is your favorite brand of Miniatures Paint?
The problem there is the atrocious GW pots. The current ones are okay, but the previous couple of generations were terrible.Ironhide wrote:I like Vallejo and the P3 paints. Mainly due to the fact that the can be stored a lot longer than GW paints
The best ones were the soft plastic pots used for the first 3 gens of paint - they stretched to get an airtight seal, and were happy being dropped (and thrown!). I still have *dozens* of citadel paints from the 80's which are in perfect condition still, and I still use. I am running low on Orc Brown though, so if anyone has any? (yes, back when GW Orcs were brown, before they were goblinoids, before they were green!).

I loved those paints. Don't know why GW had to screw up such a great line.kelanen wrote:The problem there is the atrocious GW pots. Not to double post, but found a place in the US that sells Coat D'Arms paint. This is the same paint that did GW paint in the 80' and early 90's. I think I will be ordering some sets. These are the paints I would recommend.
