This link might help:
http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2010/07/ ... allen.html
Basically, somebody over at Bell of Lost Souls took a look at the armies and rated them from top to bottom as far as power in the new 8th edition. Now, whether that holds ANY water at all, I don't know. I don't have the new book and I hardly played any 7th edition. So, I am NOT one to talk.
What is probably MORE important is... Which army do you like the best? As far as looks and general feel?
I play Dark Elves and I really like them, even if my wife likes to pummel me with her Warriors of Chaos. I don't mind.
If you are in it to just win (and good luck with that), then the above article and subsiquent comments could be very helpful.
If you want to build and paint them, then I STRONGLY suggest an army that you like the look of. Because, you are going to end up painting quite a few figures.
What kind of army do you like? Stand and shoot (used to be Dwarves and to a degree Empire), Fast but Fragile (most pointy ears), or Hard Hitting (Chaos Warriors)? Of course, I think the Daemons were Uber-powerful in the last edition but they have apparently been struck down in this edition.
Norseman, where are you and everybody else that was in the 8th edition thread? You folks can probably help out more...
Karl

the biggest change (from what i understand) is that blocks of troops are now the trend vs last edition which was rediculously OP heroes on even more rediculous mounts. but yeah, all power aside, you will be hating your life if you pick an army based on power level and hate the look

Re: What is the best Warhammer fantasy army to start with
That us definetly a very very generalized statement.
Some fantasy armies cost more than others (goblins or skaven swarm vs. Elves or chaos) and some 40k armies cost more (orcs guard )
But I would say generally you are right

I personally look at who I am and what fits me best. For instance, if you like heavy metal music, dark gothic movies, evil to triumph over good, and dexterity over strength; I'd say go for Dark Elves.
So if you have ever played an RPG, look at the kind of characters you played and what character you enjoyed the most.

Well, I can't speak for Norse, but I'm still lurking around.
That said - I think you summed up everything quite well Karl.
Essentially - pick an army who's fluff appeals to your heart and mind, and whose look on the field you appreciate. Don't pick an army to uber-game, for that way lies only madness (well, ok, maybe not madness, but at least some frustration and disappointment).
As far as Bell of Lost Souls - I think they are sniffing the crack a little too much now a days, with listing Warriors of Chaos as a "top" army now.
Now - I haven't seen the rules yet myself, but from what I understand:
In previous eds, armies that had superior close combat ability would try to maximize their win ability, and minimize the "Yatzhee-factor", by getting the charge, attacking first, and killing a lot of the opposing models, reducing the return blows of the opposing unit by as much as possible.
In 8th ed, models that are stepping up to fill in for fallen troops get to fight now - so the opposing unit rolls more dice, giving them more chances to roll 6's, forcing the elite unit into taking more chances to roll 1's for armor saves, skewing combat results massively in favor of the horde armies that have lots of bodies (and thus, lots of attacks).
Throw in the "Steadfast" rule for large formations, and I would say that the Warriors are in trouble. But that's just my uneducated opinion - I haven't seen the rules or played any games with them yet. So take that for what it's worth.

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

Any Army besides certain builds of Ogre Kingdoms and Warriors of Chaos will require lots of painting. That is, of course, if you actually paint your minis.
