I'm considering getting the parts to convert CSM SC from bolters/bolt pistols to sonic blasters.
Game wise, play wise, point wise; is it worth it? Are the blasters that much better than bolter?
The SB and bolter both have the same: range, AP, & strength. SB is assault 2 or heavy 3; whereas the bolter is rapid fire. Is it worth the 5 points per model?
Opinions..reasons...yes, no.....??

Depends on the role. If your guys are gonna camp on an objective or in cover, having the option of Heavy 3 is certainly worth it.kturock wrote: The SB and bolter both have the same: range, AP, & strength. Will they be heading into melee? If so, Assault 2 is worth it.
Doing both? Def worth it in my book.
Look at it this way..
Bolter- Rapid Fire, can shoot 2 times within a ruler's length, even if moving, double ruler once if you don't move. If you shoot, you cannot hit things.
Sonic Blaster - Assault 2, can shoot 2 times within a double ruler irregarless if you move or not.. and still lets you whack things in melee... if you DON't move.. you can shoot 3 times, but give up the option to hit someone upside the head.
2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

Like Jim said; it depends on their role.
But, if that suits the role you envision for them, the Sonics aren't an option. They're a requirement.

If u want to do a fluff list then take them and unless you plan on useing the heavy sonic wepon they get and sit in the back then don't take them.
If u plan on taking squads in a rhinos make sure you take at least one for wound allocation. The extra five points to avoid a save on your champ (with his spray wepon/power wep) is what when I look at the entry the reason to take them.
If you plan on using the whole squad with them they cost wayyyy too many points (+25 on a squad adds up to a pred eventualy).
Are you planning on doing slaneesh now over iron warriors or just a squad or two now?

Re: CSM Emperor's Children's sonic blasters
To be honest, I really like the Sonic Blasters as I think they add a lot more tactical flexibility to the squad. You can sit back with heavy weapons to defend an objective in your own deployment zone or go nuts and charge in with the assault versions and still get to assault your target. Yes, it IS a pretty serious points investment, but I think having a squad that can switch between being a heavy weapons platform and an assault squad on the fly is amazing.
