Okay, which is the better way to go for starting space marines? When I say starting, I already have 2 full tac squads, 2 rhinos, 1 squad of 10 scouts, and a thunderfire cannon. I'm debating on picking up 2 copies of AoBR for the space marines, or picking up 2 space marine battleforces. Here's the 'tale of the tape':
2 AoBR - 2 dreads, 10 termies, 20 tacs, 2 captains
2 Battleforce - 30 tacs, 10 scouts, 10 assault, 2 rhinos
Any recommendations on which way to go?

I don't think there is a better, just different. Aobr offers elites, troops and a captain to fill out your current army. The two battleforces would also fill out your troops, transports, and some fast attack.
What size games do you usually play?
Maybe one of each would be good, that would give you lots of troops, another transport, elites and 1/2 of an assault squad.

I'm probably going to be going vanilla marines so as to use most everythign I can. I am tentatively planning to model some of the tacs as sternguard and fill in an elite slot there. I've been leaning toward the 2 battleforces, but wonder how much I will suffer without having the termies and dreads - plus not having the SM captain. Then again, I could just pick up the AoBR marines as needed via trade or ebay.

I'd get one of each. AoBR gives you the Captain, Dread, & Termies which are nice to flesh out the army. Battleforce is more meat & potatoes, with Mech Tacs and AM.

I tend to see more Dreads fielded compared to Terminators. Then again that just may be my area.
I see lots of Assault marines, Tacticals, and Landraiders.
I've also been seeing alot of jumpack free assault marines, 2 flamers, in a drop pod w/ Vulkan Hestan.
So much it is making my stomach churn in a bad way

Personally I'd stay away from more troop choices and concentrate on filling your empty elite, fast, and heavy support. Most scenarios only have a few objectives to hold and you could always combat squad in a pinch.
I personally dread facing the drop pod of ten sternguard (that can combat squad on landing) with Lysander attached.
Also see a lot of that tank character in a Vindicator.
As for HQ choices in a vanilla army the codex special characters can really pack a punch. In my area librarians are a must as there's many Eldar players.
Try to get the most out of your models. Razorbacks can can easily be rhinos with some parts not glued to the model, magnetization could even make it a predator with the right bitz. I personally have a magnetized land raider that can do all three codex variants.
Spend wisely and you could have money left over....

Re: Which is better way to go for starting Space Marines?
Ok I need to make a correction to my statement.
I do not see many normal terminators on the field. I only see th/ss terminators.
I am seeing alot of sternguard also showing as mentioned. Though I tend to see them with a librarian in tow so they can play hopscotch around the board.
I also second that reccomendation for a vindicator. Even though I know it does not come in either of the sets you are asking about.
I'd personally go with 2 battleforces as it is going to give you everything you need to kitbash your own units. Unless you like the commander in the AoBR set then you have no need for a "real" commander
