Dang I got no street cred!
Re: Trend or me
I can understand where you are coming from, but look at my viewpoint. I've been here much longer than you. I go off and on about trading as my hobby interests and army interests wane back and forth. But I was here before the new system, you can see my carry over ratings from 1996. You don't want to trust my honesty as a trader? Fine, don't bother discussing a trade with me. I can understand short timers with no history, but personally, I think there should be a bonus for old-timers in the rules. But that's just me, someone who's been here since 1996, back when Trademaster Adam ran this place (nothing against current management, just pointing out my history).

Re: Trend or me
Well, now there is a good point. That is kind of strange to see. Fool Injected's FIRST trade was with Creeper (a late trade for Creeper). Now Fool Injected has 3 times the rating.
To be honest, I don't think that I have looked at the DATES on the trade ratings. Although, Creeper, your's stand out. I don't know how I would approach that as far as trade negotiations.
We have had this discussion alot (I won't bring up a certain thread about ITL elitism). Montaa is right to a certain degree that it isn't a RULE. But, in a way, it just makes sense to me. I wouldn't bat an eye if Stanislav (or any other trader with a 400+ rating) asked me to ship first during trade negotiations. I wouldn't get indignant or upset at all. The ONLY times that I have had trouble here on Bartertown were when I ignored this sort-of-rule and either sent a paypal payment first to a low-rated trader or simulsent items with a lower rated trader. I won't make those mistakes again (especially the one where I have to send payment first ).
To me, the only argument in favor of simulsending when one trader is much lower than another is time. That one I can understand. Everybody has their own ways of doing things. If there is something during trade negotiations that you don't like, then let them now and if you don't like their answer then just politely say no. There is really no need for hard feelings.

Re: Trend or me
@Stan.
Wow. You'd make me ship first? You said what we had was "special."
I feel so dirty, now.
@Nuwie.
Nope. None, No0b. Do some trades and earn it. lolz
@Creeper.
FYI, TMA still runs the place... just not actively.
It's still his, and he does the tech stuff. Lin's the main man for rules and the like, but if Adam ever said something HAD to be a certain way... that's the way it would be.

Lower rating? You ship first.

Re: Trend or me
To be frank, I normally don't have a problem with trusting folks with a high rating. But if someone pushes a big attitude about it, I will certainly have questions. I'm proud of my rep here, even if I don't have a 3 digit rating, because I have been active here for over a decade. Yeah, I come and go with my trading - I think that makes sense with older members of the hobby.
As I mentioned earlier, I would like age of account should have some effect. You could still see if the account had trade references, so a long-time but no trade account would flag. I think there should be an impact to the rating system based on dollar value of the trades. Let's consider this: we both have 5000 point armies. You part yours out into 20 trades. You get 20 positive references. I sell mine in one lot (which is what I normally do) so I get 1 positive trade reference. The only real difference is that you paid to ship to 20 different people, whereas I took a loss (almost a guarantee) on the overall trade compared to you, and shipped to 1 person.
Plus, there is the fact that I've had a hellacious week including spraining my reconstructed ankle twice, and I hit a "You kids get off my lawn!" moment. I'll blame Gran Torino.
@JohnHwangBT - LOL. Thanks for the laugh.

I guess we got something in comon Creeper. Relatively low trade ratings, but very long length of B-Town service.

Re: Trend or me
Creeper,
Agreed, time spent on here should count as well. Even though my profile shows 2003, I have been here a little bit longer than that. Someone that gets to 100 rating in less than a year doesn't impress me as much as someone that has done it over a longer time. But, that's just me.
Searching the "rolling post" format still gives me shudders as opposed to the more updated format.

@MM- I might spot you a day or so, but other than that...nah.
Actually my general rule is what I stated, and only a few do I deviate from my policy. It's still a case-by-case decision.

Lower rating? I ask that you ship first. Also, if I offer a stupidly good deal and you try to negotiate even lower...don't call it bad communication that you didn't get a reply. I deleted the message.

Buy, sell or trade....it's all the same to me. Lower refs pays/ships first!
Tyrants can not be stopped by earnest words and furrowed brows. Action, strong bold action coming from a position of strength and determination, is the only effective deterrent.

Re: Trend or me
To be perfectly honest, that kind of policy definitely turns me off to trading with you or reading your listings.
What that policy says to somebody who has been around BTown for a while is "I don't trust you, I want my stuff now but I will ship to you at my leisure." We've all been low rated. We all know how long it can take to get stuff back when on the low side of a trade. Simultrading means getting your stuff inside of a week. Ship and return means 2-4, depending on the reliability of the trader (and extenuating circumstances.) The Btown guidelines and general practices are here to protect us, not to use to lord over others. Once you've gotten triple digits, you have a substantial paper trail and while that is no guarantee that you won't pull a burn, it is an incredible deterrent that requires you to move, abandon your e-mail and generally disappear for some of the geniuses on these boards to prevent tracking you down.
It just comes across as a tad bit disrespectful to be so cautious with long established members. Not trying to rip into you, just being honest since you asked.

Re: Trend or me
Thanks guy, a voice of reason. I agree with you 100%. I have read the stuff on here. I am not changing. If a 100 rated traded is demanding we trade at the same time. Oh well, no deal for you. I earned my rating. My rating is higher and we have never done business, guess what they are shipping first.Stanislav wrote:I can be lenient with someone that is in the ballpark of my rating, but otherwise, no. Lower rating ships first. Ballpark to me is within a 100 or so rating.
Yes, I was there at one time, and guess what? So was or is everyone else. Just because you have gotten into the 100s does not give you a free ticket to Simo-Shippingville. I have earned my rating, and wheter it is a perk or not, I intend to use it.
On the flip side for me, if Porkuslime or a few others asked me to ship first, I would. If things were not said, I would still assume I would be shipping first on a trade.
As for someone who has gotten their rating up in the 100-200 range and thinks they can demand me to do anything...well, that is what the "foes" button is for. I don't have to see their stupid demands.

No problem. If my policy turns you thats cool. Don't reply to my posting. No need to waste my time or yours. Because your lower rating and never doing business with you, would result in me asking you to ship first.Massawyrm wrote:To be perfectly honest, that kind of policy definitely turns me off to trading with you or reading your listings.

I am not the only one with "additional" trade requirements in the signature. You will find these requirements are in our signatures for a reason.
You are right there are no guarantees that someone will not rip you off. The higher the rating usually the lower chance. This is yet another reason why the lower guy ships first when dealing with me.
Look at my rating and my date. I have been around since 2004 not 2006. When in negotiations the lower rated guy pops up "hey lets ship at the same time" this is before I can ask them to ship first. I never demand they ship first. I ask. If they say no, then I move on. Pretty simple in my opinion. If a person can't wait for me to ship then they should move on.
If we have never done business and your rating is lower then why should I trust you? Does the lower rated person not trust me?
I asked for some opinions. Some people posted good stuff while others didn't.
Thanks again everyone for your posts.

THanks everyone for your response.
Bascially, it will be business as usual. I am not changing
Those of you who don't like my "additional" trade requirements thats cool, just don't respond to any of my posts.
One thing I have learned here on Bartertown. If you are patient you will eventually get what you want for in trades.
thanks
