Do you think my primer is still good?

Post by Imaginos »

I bought some primer when I was into 40K years ago, like when 3rd edition was first released. It is mostly unused GW Black primer. Do you think it might still be good? I don't want to waste a mini by testing it, and I'm not sure testing it on cardboard would give an accurate assessment. Any idea what the shelf life on this stuff is?

I would grab some garbage from your house.. something paper, something plastic, and maybe a penny or nickel.

Shake, spray, wait.. then assess.

My personal off the cuff thought, is if the propellant still makes it spray, the primer should still be good. Drying times might be off.. but well shaken and mixed (probably double recommended time).. should give you a good idea.

If you don't have your Location listed in your User Control Panel, why not take a second and update it? It will let your trading partners know where you are from the beginning.

I use the Unofficial Porkuslime Trading Guidelines - if you have way less refs.. you ship first.

Folks I am awaiting a ref from.. Zack

I support pork's response. Give it a try on some random plastic you have lying around. If it works great, if not, at least you're just out some random junk and not a good model.

If it's spray primer, do what pork says. Make sure you shake it very well. I also suggest flipping the can upside down for a few minutes then shake it again.
WARNING: DO NOT STORE A SPRAY CAN UPSIDE DOWN. The paint settles into the nozzle and it becomes useless. [spoken from experience.]

If it's not a spray, but a liquid, you can thin it with either water or paint thinner. [depending on wheather it's latex (water-based) or petroleum based.]

I'm guessing it won't be good. For some reason, primers (especially GW) seem to have a VERY short life span.

Follow pork's advice to be sure, though.

Make certain that, when shaking, you've been thorough.

I like to move my can in a circle motion after shaking it thoroughly to ensure that any paint in the "corners" at the bottom of the can gets picked up and mixed in.

Yes. I saw it and said it anyway. I'm fully prepared to be harrassed for it. LOL

Well there is a corner; where the side of the can meets the bottom of the can.
Unless of course the can is made like a 2 liter bottle or glass thermos.

Precisely.
I was more referring to being harassed for the text that I quoted, and how it might read if taken out of context.
LOL
