As pork said, there MAY be someone interested in those...OR, if you are inclined.. offer to trade the 20 DE you have for a new book.. enough folks here on bartertown might indeed want those troopers.

Okay, back again. Assuming I am able to get my hands on the following Tau, what would you buy next?
2 battleforces
1 crisis suit commander
3 sniper teams
I know I need to buy the Tau Empire codex. What else?

For me, I would try to trade your kroot for more Fire Warriors.. and then pick up a Hammerhead for the big honkin tank section of the army list..Creeper wrote:Okay, back again. Assuming I am able to get my hands on the following Tau, what would you buy next?

Why 3 Sniper Teams? I'll admit they look pretty cool, but you'd be much better off money wise and game wise getting a Hammerhead or two in my opinion.Creeper wrote:Okay, back again. Assuming I am able to get my hands on the following Tau, what would you buy next?

Re: Need Suggestions on spending some dough
And to show that I'm not ignoring earlier advice, the following was suggested earlier:
1 Tau Codex - $22 - need
2 Tau Battleforce - $180 - got
1 Tau Battlesuit Commander - $30 - got
1 Hammerhead Gunship - $40 - going with Skyray because of extra sprues (may get more than 2)
I will also look to see if they have any of the Tau Apocalypse sets left.
I'm considering the Pirahna - any words on it? How many fire warrior squads is a good number? IIRC, in 3rd edition, you were limited to 6 troops - is that still the case? I thought Kroot were the necessary CC force for Tau - should I avoid them? What about Vespids?
As for the sniper teams, they are part of a trade I am working out. Also, if I understand correctly, they are a way to get a markerlight on the table easier.

Re: Need Suggestions on spending some dough
6 troops is still the norm for a regular game of 40K. You might want to pick up your Tau Empire Codex first. That way you have more of a feel for the army. I don't know much about Kroot, but I know that they are the CC unit for Tau. I just don't think they stack up well against other army's CC options. Tau was made to be shooty (my opinion). I don't have a clue about the vespid. As for the Sniper drone units, I think that the Sky Ray, Hammerhead, and Broadsides would be better heavy options (also my opinion).
I would really think about picking up the Codex before you start to really eat into all of your cash.

With Tau, lots of Fire Warriors with Devilfish transports is a good thing. They got good armor saves and an awesome weapon for a small amount of points.
Mainstays of a Tau force:
Commander (mandatory)
Crisis Suits
Fire Warriors
Pathfinders
Devilfish Transports
Hammerheads or Skyrays (I personally prefer the Hammerhead)
The ones in bold is what I would start with, and then build around it.

Re: Need Suggestions on spending some dough
I've always liked kroot, with thier infiltrate, and forest fieldcraft abilities they can really take advantage of any forest cover on the field. (not sure if the extended range through cover would count in this ed)
Basically break it down
Kroot are cheap, bolter strength shots, that can hide in buildings and gain that wonderful 4+ save. You can have 20 of them, so 20 bolter str shots at Marine BS Make sure you take a shaper for the LD and serious HtH ability within the unit.
It makes for a nice "Sit back and hold my objective unit" with all the wonderful cover saves everywhere.

Re: Need Suggestions on spending some dough
Ok, here is what I ended up coming out of the store with:
AoBR box
Tau Empire Codex
Tau Battleforce
Hammerhead
SKyray
Pirahna
Crisis battlesuit commander
XV8 crisis battlesuit
Kroot Shaper
GW green stuff
Zap-plastic glue
Army Builder v3
Add that to what is coming in a trade:
2 Tau Battleforces
Crisis battlesuit commander
3 Sniper teams
And I found 24 firewarriors already here at home I had received in a trade when Tau first got released.
The store did not have any Broadside suits or Pathfinders (particularly with rail rifle), so I need to pick some of those up.
I figure I can use the extra rulebook and templates from AoBR, as well as the minis from the box, for trade bait to pick up some stuff I'm missing.

Re: Need Suggestions on spending some dough
Honestly, the $60 from AoBR would've been bettter spent on Tau items, since you already have everything from the box you need. AoBR minis are SOOOO common that their value isn't quite what it once was.
Still, though... at least you can put together small armies for 4 armies, now, and get in some test games on a 4x4 table.
With that Army Builder software, you can "get by" to a degree without codices for the Orks and SM's, but I suggest trying to get ahold of them ASAP.

Re: Need Suggestions on spending some dough
Well, he asked me if I didn't need the rules, and being that I used to work for him, I didn't want to say I got the mini rule book on ebay. So I picked up the AoBR set, hoping that I could trade the figs inside for other Tau stuff.
And that was the other problem I ran into, I got everything Tau he had except for: 1 box of fire warriors, 1 box of kroot, 2 boxes of stealth suit teams (since each of the 3 battleforces have 3 stealth suits in them), a kroot ox, and a kroot hound blister.
I'm hoping to swing the minis in trade for something, I just have to get the rest of my gaming stuff pulled together into a list for posting.
Army builder was something we required years ago when I worked at the store. Any tournaments had to have AB lists printed, even if it was the person showing up early and us typing it in and printing. It isn't so much for the other codex cheat sheets so much as just making it easier on me to build my Tau list.

Re: Need Suggestions on spending some dough
Eventhough I recomended Kroot, I wouldn't have much more than 1 full unit.
I was never a fan of krootox or hounds as I used my kroot as I described, which relies on the infiltrate ability. The backbone of your army will be the FW, be it the fishes of death style fighting or the gunline. I used 3 rifles, 2 carbines and my kroot unit in every game as troops are simply cheap for tau. Invest in some Magnets little ones. 1/8 x 1/32 or smaller and magnetize your BS weapons/upgrades you'll thank yourself later when you play style becomes more apparent.
Mind you, I played Tau when they first came out, but with the new cover rules I can only see where my troop selection would get better.
