Whats up with the Rudeness
Hello everyone,
I have been on bartertown going on 10 years now.. I have seen it up and i have seen it down. I have tried to leave the community a couple times now but my addiction to plastic and metal has always kept me coming back. but I have noticed recently the large influx of new users to this board and with the influx of new uses a huge decline in etiquette and courtesy.
I have found several new users lacking in any kind of courtesy, demanding things and just making complete assumptions. and I know if i treated these people like that they would be offended for me doing it to them. I'm also tired of the excuse that 'm new here and don't know the rules to doing things... people you may be new here but your not new to life.. and if you treat people in the public as you treat people here.. you must have a very boring, and lonely life.
Is this just me? am i to old to "GET IT" has the world evolved into people just demanding things, no politeness , no benefit of the doubt and no patients and somehow i'm now the dinosaur sitting on my porch in the rocking chair shaking my stick at the kids "GET OFF MY LAWN"
What do the rest of the old people here find... am i alone in this... is it just time for me to retire to my rocking chair.. i know its getting to the point that i would rather throw extra stuff away than trade it...
Thanks for listening...

Re: Whats up with the Rudeness
Don't do that. Send it to me. NOW!!!i know its getting to the point that i would rather throw extra stuff away than trade it...
I have met a few fairly rude traders of late. Although, I had one about six months ago that took the cake. He was PMing me about 6 times a day that he needed a Steam Tank painted RIGHT NOW!!!!! He wanted to pay $10 to get it painted and I had to pay shipping back to him. He sputtered on and on for about 2 weeks with me politely saying that I couldn't get it done that fast for so little money. Finally, he gave up. I think he moved on to another painting service. I feel for them.
Don't let that comment fool you, my customers have been an absolutely GREAT lot of guys. It's just this one character (I think he was about 10 years old).
I could go on and on about the lack of communication skills. But, that has always been here on the site. I just traded with a guy who hardly said ANYTHING. It was hard to get the trade done because he would send one word replies.
I just try and make light of it and move on. I have had a LOT of charged discussions with traders who wanted their money up front. That tends to bring out the worst in my trade partners. But, nowadays, I just stick to my guns and if they don't want to do it then that's OK. There are more fish in the ocean. I just really don't want to get caught up in a the_trader kind of situation. But, it's usually this problem that makes my trade partners rude.
Obviously, you do more trading volume here than most, so you see more of the bad side than most.

Re: Whats up with the Rudeness
Thomas you aren't necessarily old and rocker-ready, but you are well established so your patience with the new blood is growing thin. This is still the internet so the anonymity of hiding behind a screen name is still quite available. Some of these new people are here to rip you off, some to be rude but I still think a majority of them are here to find out if they can move unwanted models for a little cash or something new and shiny.
10% of the people here do 90% of the posting and probably the same is true for trading. I don't know how many active (I’ll define it as 1 post per month) users there are, but I doubt that its more than 20% of the registered folks. Just look at the number of people that you have traded with multiply times over the years. Personally its becoming more and more for me as the days go on.
BTown takes a while to get used to. Scouring the site on a regular basis is the only way to become familiar with it. If you've never seen this place before, you would no concept that it isn't a place designed to separate you from your money. The old blood, like yourself, are intimate with the workings of bartertown therefore posses an understanding that any newbie won't understand.
Rudeness is never a good thing, but will be part of the internet forever. People say things on boards that they would never had the courage to say even in email. Many of these people will grow tired of not getting a rise out of the rocking chair bound and move on. Those that stay will adjust to the way the community here works and hopefully get some new shineys!!

Re: Whats up with the Rudeness
Ah, Rudeness.
I know thee well.
DS, I don't get as much trading as you, so we have to keep that in mind.
I really don't get a lot of rudeness in trades, but I believe that you are NOT imagining things. I see a lot of rudeness on internet Forums in general (not so much here, thank God). I can absolutely see how it would flow over into trades.
As has been said... the Net offers a certain amount of anonymity and, as such, there will always be a contongent or ITG's, A-holes and IDQ's (Internet Tough Guy's... @ssholes... and Internet Drama Queens). The best we can do is drop them onto our DNT list, ignore it and move on.

One profane word?
I counted THREE (in the manner they were used)... and one of them was used twice.
I can't believe you posted that.
That's it... Where's my hammer....
LOL
Eric
P.S. VERY true, that theory. Just about any 40K discussion forum website will prove it.

Re: Whats up with the Rudeness
Besides the rudeness (I agree with you 100% that BT has ssen it's fair share of rude posters lately), I have also noticed an up swing in non-feedback leavers too. Heck, I have only made a small number of trades, but I am up to 5 no-feedback left trades now.
It would be nice if folks started to be a bit friendlier.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that a lot of these kids don't understand that the person on the other end of the network is a human being, with the same emotions as they have. That combined with this being the "Me! Now! Generation" it makes it rough. I work at a boy scout camp during the summer months, and the quality of young staff has fallen drastically in the last two to three years - I know this is a small study group, but I think it has larger socialital ramifications.
The kids that are horribly rude on here won't get many trades, and will probably wind up going away on their own, quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Re: Whats up with the Rudeness
Well said, Crestion.
I think you're only partially right. Unfortunately, not all of the rudeness comes from kids.
Much -maybe even half- of it actually comes from grown adults.

Well.... p!55 on me. I don't know then, unless it has something to do with their e-phallis. (if I'm not allowed to phrase it that way, please censor me.) I would guess that my statement regarding the neglect that the other person on the end of the wire is a human being as well would still stand.DarkSoul wrote:2 of the 4 that i have dealt with this month were all well over 18...
