Ouch. Another form of "masking" instead of using tape, is to use axle grease/lube. Spread it over the clear pieces of the canopy and you can spray it with primer, then just wipe the grease off.

Would a coating of Elmers glue do the same?
Say... for a teen-ager or young twenty-something who might not have access to that stuff, for example?
You know... Spread the Elmers. Let it dry. Spray the primer. Let it dry. Peel off Elmers. Voila.

It may work. It doesn't take much to go to Autozone or even Wal-Mart to get grease. Hell, you could even try vegetable oil or vaseline. Most every household has that.

Vaseline will work. Not so certain about Elmer's glue. It could discolor the clear plastic and make it more opaque.

Typically, I soak overnight, but even a couple hours will be plenty. Superclean is a very strong degreaser that generally strips multiple layers down to the bare plastic. It also dissolves Green Stuff and debonds CA. Awesome!
For GW primer and paint, it will usually come off clean, nearly new (but totally degreased). You will have some issues with crazing by "aggressive" plastic primers that bind by dissolving to the outer surface via solvent, or staining from metallic chemical reactions, but that would be an issue with any stripper. You will also have some issues with tiny bits of paint sticking in crevices, but again, that is typical.
In most cases, metal and plastic end up looking like new. Highly recommended!

That reminds me to check if I've got anything soaking that I've forgotten about.

I always use Pine-sol,just about a dollar from the Dollar General store,and it does the trick with plastics and metals,works better than nail polish,and i've never used Simple Green.....but 24 hours in full strength Pine-sol a tooth brush and some warm water...sometimes just the water will do it.

Gotta go with the Super Clean. I have been using it for a couple of years and it is the best there is for stripping plastic. If you have a large enough container you can submerge the tank in you may be able to disassemble it as well. Leave it in the SC for a couple of days. Take it out, scrub off the paint/primer then leave it out to dry for a few days. The glue MAY become brittle (especially super glue) allowing you to take the plastic model apart. The SC is a detergent and can dry out adhesives making it possible to disassemble plastics. I like MM's idea of using elmers to mask the cockpit canopy. This should work! If you have a hard time taking the glue off you can soak a paper towel with water and let it sit on the glue coverd canopy to soften the glue, should peel right off.
