Question adout DE plastic warriors

Post by consectari »

I'm in need of some girly legs to go with some female wood elf torsos (besides the obvious wood elf legs). All the other elves have robes or mail skirts or something. Not at all what an active sci-fi female should have. Eldar have all those gems on them, so that leaves Dark Eldar. I'm fairly sure if I cut away the spikes & add a little GS, they'll be just what I'm after.

Questions is, should I buy new or used? I'm not worried about stripping them, I'm concerned about usability.

I've never seen any DE minis except in pics. If I buy used, how hard will it be to separate torsos from legs? I know they have a weird join, but beyond that, I'm unsure.

I was planning to fill in the pelvic area with GS, but would it be better to leave the torso & legs connected and cut a new, flat connection point at the waist?

Just hoping to get some input before I invest in what might be a futile experiment. Any advice appreciated.

Con

P.S.
Before anyone starts offering to sell me their DE army, I'm only looking for 15-ish warriors. Maybe 20 if the deal is really good.

Most Eldar legs don't have much in the way of gems on them.

I'd start with a few used, grab a few of each type, maybe ask a friend for a single pair of legs to experiment with.
As for separating them, that is all up to the person who put them together in the first place, alot of glue = heck of a time getting them apart, a small dab = fairly easy, but still be careful.

From what I remember the DE legs were slightly bulkier than the Elar legs, but then again I haven't seen a pair of plastic DE legs for 6-7+ years

Heck if you really wany I think I have a few of the old 1 piece plastic eldar Guardian models laying around, that is if you want to try your hand at carving/cutting them apart

It would also depend on the type of glue used. If they used a CA or CS type superglue (ZAP-a-Gap) them a bath in Simple Green for a couple days will weaken the glue bond. Found this out stripping all my RT Beakies. If they used a standard plastic glue (Testors) you'll have some problems as this glue type melts the plastic together. Simple Green will help. A little... maybe...
Go on, laugh! But one day, you'll be sitting in your house feeling all safe and secure... Then you'll look over and I'll be there... Doin'... stuff!

The DE legs would probably be a decent match for what you're after. I'd recommend picking them up unassembled, though, as I'm not too sure what kind of damage removing the torso from the legs of an assembled model could cause. If buying used, as others mentioned, some stripping agents (sounds like a great job, huh?) actually melt the superglue (depending which kind was used), so this is also a possibility.

I'd recommend picking them up 'new' and filling the leg join with green stuff. Should save you some headaches.

Thanks for the advise. I'll go with the unassembled, just to be safe.

At last my female muties/scavvies will walk!

Have you considered Eldar Guardian legs? Same size, but less spikey. So either way, you're trimming down.

The last possibility would be Empire troops wearing hose.

After Elves, Eldar were the first things I looked at. I just thought they were a little too "Eldar" to easily disguise. DE on the other hand, if you look past the spikes, they just have this sci-fi look which I thought might work.

I might need some more info on this! I've got militia and flagellants, but wasn't aware of anything with "hose". That might work better for female Muties/Scavvies who could stand to be a bit less sci-fi and a bit more ragged.

Edited for dyslexia

The old 5E / 6E Empire State Troops - Swordsmen / Handgunners / Crossbowmen wore historically-accurate hose with codpieces, as one would expect for Landsknecht.

Sounds good, but is there any chance those are still lingering out there anywhere?

No idea. But the current Empire guys still appear to be men in tights.
