Lost/Stolen Mail

Post by bluemeenie »

All,

Ok so I have a situation that just came to my attention and am coming to the group to see how/if there is anything more I can do to help myself and the trader I was working with.

Did a trade where I paid cash for mini from Canada and just received an envelope in the mail from the Detroit Bulk sorting center that contained the top part of the padded envelope that has been physically exacto-knifed off and a letter stating they found it on the floor.

They have asked me to fill out a lost mail form and send it to the St Paul Recovery center (which I am about to do) and I also called the PostMaster Generals office to register a complaint, but I am wondering if anyone has any other ideas on how to recoup the other traders loss or if you have anyone has had this happen to them and actually gotten their stuff back....

I am also trying to get the letter to the other trader so he can at least get his postal back....

I'll post pics of the evidence if the other party i'm working with says it's alright but I'm pretty bummed..... :(

GO GO POSTAL THEFT>

Just a theory... could Customs have opened the package before it got to the Detroit Bulk sorting center?

As far as recuperating the loss, did the other trader insure the item?

don't know...

and no it wasn't insured...for the size and cost of the item the shipping to ensure from Canada would not have been worth it.

well there are several explanations.
1st it could've got to customs and got lost there. [doubtful, but possible]

2nd and more likely, it was a padded envelope and went thru a sorting machine, either it, or another piece of mail jammed, and it got ripped open. [yes it looks cut, but the metal edges of the machine, that the mail moves by/along, at 10+mph, can and will cut paper.
[think of a jam as someone making a 90 degree turn, on the interstate, at highway speeds, in rush hour traffic.]
[think of the rip/tear occurring the same way you can rip a sheet or several sheets of paper, by holding against a counter top or straight edge, like a ruler.]

as far as getting compensation, like i've said in other posts, and should have been sticked up top;
if it's not worth buying insurance, don't complain when it gets destroyed. [just like buying a car. if you can afford to not have it insured, because it costs more than the cars worth; don't cry when it gets totaled.]
Heh, I was called a Grognard. ;-)

^ Agreed in regards to insurance. I've shipped stuff to the US many times with insurance, and unless it's for a large amount, it only adds a negligible cost to your shipping expenses.

cool...well I guess another way to ensure this might not happen without insurance is to use a box instead of the padded envelope. (and yes it was a padded envelope).

As far as I can tell it was not damaged in Canada or done by Customs...as the empty mail letter came from the Detroit Bulk Mail processing center.

always put an invoice inside you packages; with both a 'to' and a 'from'. have it list the items. now true most people won't know what a squd of space amrines are, but will understand 10 metal [or plastic] space marines. and if they see 10 metal or plastic 'things'.. you have a chance to get them back.

yes boxes are more durable, study, than padded envelopes.. they'll get crushed and spray the padding, [you do put some form of fill in it, right? ] {no comment MM} but will survive.. usually.. mostly.. kinda.. sorta...

i usually always send in a box...they give you those little priority boxes for free now. :) but I was the receivee on this one...oh well. Canada I guess automatically insures mail up to 100 dollars if it's lost I guess so I'm waiting on my trade partner to finish on his end.
