Actually, it's not a "newb" rule. Many experienced traders who haven't shipped large boxes in a while would be surprised to discover that, as well.

You're right about the taping. Especially for heavy items, like books.

Every circumfrence of the box should have TWO plines where it is encitcled by packing tape.
That keeps the corners from spliting if it's nailed by a heavy box.

If it's books you should always pack seperately and get the highly discounted media mail rates....



then ship the other lighter stuff by itself.

all of the shippers: usps.com, fedex.com and ups.com have online shipping/rate calculators..
you can always use a bathroom scale to approximate the cost, before you ship.. while there, you should see where it asks dimensions.

usps sorts everythings on machines, thus sorting them faster. the larger boxes, both heavy and light, are sorted more or less by hand. [actually very large pie shaped slides.] if it won't fit on a machine to be sorted, it gets 'a non-machineable' surcharge.

i believe ups uses rollers.

the best way to check shipping, both to foreign and domestic countries; is to check all 3 of the shippers websites for rules, regulations, and costs.
nothing like getting surprized when you show up...especially if you gotta eat so of the cost, or mote than you realized.

I think i can drop mine from 3 floors up and they'll all be intact 0.o ( all units are either box or bagged before layered into foam fluff things into the final package box )

also have enough tapes on it to be water resistant lol
