Taking 3D Pictures of Models?

Post by Ironhide »

Can someone tell me how this is done and what program is used? Like the pics Privateer Press uses on their site. I know how to take pictures. I'm not a novice. Just a novice as far as 3D pics are concerned.

P.S. Do they require those funny little glasses? I don't like the glasses. My head's too big for 'em & they give me vertigo. lol

I think he's referring to the spinning 3d version of the model, which, if I understand correctly, is done by taking a lot of pictures from a 360 side view and building them into a single image. I am not sure how to turn it into a flash loop, but I think you can use one of the big photoshop programs to build the multiple-image file. Kind of like avatars that change.

Here is a link - it is a flash loop:

I always thought they did that by the same method as the "Bullet time" movie shots.. almost a stop-motion process.. shoot a pic, move the model, shoot it again, move it again.. then chain them togeather to have it rotate..
2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

Ah.

: (

Color me disappointed.

Exactly as has been stated, those 360 degree pictures are shot as a series of stills, then linked together.
You can go this with free programs available online that create animated gif's.

I can't recall the name of the one I use, but I can post it later, if anyone's interested (either that, or Norseman might know. I told him about it before).

Creeper has the right of it. So, how many pics would you need to take I wonder? And I'm assuming you would either need a spinning base or a camera mount that can spin around the model.

i would guess you could put a mark down where the model originally rests at, and then just rotate it on that spot for the pics.

as for the pics, their rotation usually has a half dozen or so angles, doesn't it, i would guess the more photo's you use, the smoother the rotation will be

I would guess then, that 24 pics for a smooth rotation. Using the clock method of positioning (i.e one picture for each facing)

Wouldn't it be easier to put a digital video recorder on a mount, then make a base for the mini, and just record the full 360 rotation? Since those are flash, couldn't you just use the video instead of snapshots? I don't work with the stuff, so I don't know. But it just seems like you'd have a better go with that rather than trying to link up 24 shots.

Also, putting 24 shots in the file will make it pretty big, I would think. I don't know how it would compare to a video of the rotation though.

I doubt 24 would be enough, honestly.
I'd probably think to double that, at least.

That's what I thought.

IMO, the easiest way would be to make an animated GIF file.

Put the camera on a tripod and the model on a little turntable. Take 12 pictures as normal, and just turn it into an animated GIF.

This should be doable with any "good" picture program.

Get out of my head John! :) That's exactly along the lines I was thinking.

The video would be a bigger file size, and not as easily postable in a forum type environment as an animated gif. Or so I've been told.

I still think 12 would be far too few and the gif would look stuttered.

Here's the program I make animated gifs with:

It's a MajorGeeks download (so, you know it's virus free), is freeware, and is as simple as drag & drop.
