I expect it has to do with compiling user statistical information against a future sale of the website OR simply tracking user habits (though probably the former), though it may never have been fully implemented.carmachu wrote: Why cant refs tell us how much roughly was the trade? every time I make a ref for a person, I can comment and under it askes me the estimated value. I always fill that out. Why cant folks see that?
Further, I would absolutely NOT want how much I spend to be publicly available. My girlfriend is an accountant.
I am always in the market for weird and wonderful GW oddbitz and ephemera. PM me if you have something old/weird/rare.

Trademaster Adam wrote the reference system and chose the various fields to fill out. I *THINK* (and have no concrete evidence) that the field was there in case of a BTR for some reason, but.. no idea. I mean, you can leave a neg ref on someone and claim 1000 bucks lost if you need to..

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.
If you don't have your Location listed in your User Control Panel, why not take a second and update it? It will let your trading partners know where you are from the beginning.
I use the Unofficial Porkuslime Trading Guidelines - if you have way less refs.. you ship first.

I know that, at one time, Lin was able to mine that data. He once (years ago) did the math and realized that we (as a site) moved more GW merchandise that year than GW.

Re: Things I've learned being new to selling on Bartertown
Seems the consensus is
-"if I wanted to shop on ebay I would"
-"switching from btwon to ebay to complete a sale seems fishy"
-"pay you dues and get your rating up"
Don't get me wrong ebay is not great.... I lose some money to fees, I lose on shipping because I have to compete with US dealers, I lose because I pay insurance out of pocket, I buy carboard boxes and bubble wrap but I also reach a wide number of customers so ultimately money in my pockt is better than a pile of junk in my basement.
I totally understand the pay your dues thing because I too take a great deal of pride in my ebay rating as I'm sure btwoners do with their ratings.
I feel there's a great deal of emotion with this issue. I get why somebody who has spent years on btown building a rating would be offended by me wanting to do the deal on ebay as a compromise (to me shipping before paying through btown).
Thanks for the insights.

You're right. There can be a LOT of emotion involved. Myself, I don't get it. I don't see why anyone needs to get emotional about it... but it happens. Taking offense to your ebay suggestion is a bit ridiculous to me, as well... I can understand not wanting to, but being offended by it? Nope.
Another thing to add to your consensus is that the more cogs you put in the machine, the more places it can break down. That break down usually results in one side or the other getting hosed and being ticked.
