Am I being paranoid?

Post by MEDEVL »

Is it just me or are there a lot of "suspicious" feeling new people showing up lately?? I see an awful lot of zero rating people making pretty outlandish demands of their trading partners (like not shipping first unlesstheir rating is 50). I'm sure Bartertown isn't the only place to trade but when people say they've been burned several times for this or that I have to ask where?? If your rating is zero then I don't see where you're in the position to reasonably demand much of anything and expect to get it. Like I said in the title, it's probably me being paranoid but it just feels a lot less innocent around here lately.

thats that person's choice, and more then 1 board out there has trading forums up dude. I've been burned on a couple of occasions. And unless I KNOW they are an established trader.. Im REALLY hesitant about shipping first. If the person has 3 positive trades, they are alot more likely to rip me off then someone with 300 positive trades.

You can call it "outlandish" I call it "Being smart" Just remember, there are no set "you must trade first guidelines" for bartertown. Its all up to whatever the people involved agree upon

i know that there are alot more rude people here now. i've sent pm's or answered pm's and after 5 days of not getting a reply, i guess the trader isn't interested.
a simple, "no thanks, not interested", would be nice. i wish i could leave a neg ref on this. "i sent a pm to 'newb trader'. he asked for prices, pics, cost of shipping, to lower my price and then no answer."
mna that really irratates me.

I totally agree there.. I see messages move from Outbox to Sentbox.. and nothing ..

Then, in once instance, I got a PM from someone 3 WEEKS later.. asking if I had models to trade, that I had prior offered him in the initial PM..

Sheesh.. these kids nowdays..

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

If you don't have your Location listed in your User Control Panel, why not take a second and update it? It will let your trading partners know where you are from the beginning.

I use the Unofficial Porkuslime Trading Guidelines - if you have way less refs.. you ship first.

Folks I am awaiting a ref from.. Zack

one small thing to consider and please believe i feel like you do as well but some newbies dont know how to answer their pms i know its pretty lame but i have had some come back 2 weeks later saying sorry i didnt know i had messages

the other aspect is if it is a respected trader their box may be full i know i have missed some when my box was over crowded

just my op :)

There are A LOT of rude nooBs here lately. It's one of the reasons I'm not trading for the next few months. My Do Not Trade list has gone from non existant to 5 people within 4 weeks.
Trading Guidelines:
1. Lower rating ships first - even if I am purchasing.
2. If you agree to buy something, you have 72hrs. in which to pay. If payment is not received in 72hrs., I will automatically post a Non-Payment/Backout thread.
3. Refs are left upon positive receipt of goods, NEVER beforehand!
4. I accept Paypal & USPS money orders and charge for shipping AT COST. I make no profit from it.
5. I trade NIB/new models at retail.

Paranoia

Post by H W Raney »

BarterTown might be becoming a victim of it's own success. We've got nearly 10,000 registered users, even a very small percentage of idiot/arrogant/rude/etc is still going to be a sizeable number. Of course, one tends to notice these twits more often as they're so irritating. Bad apple, etc.
Stick to the BarterTown Trading basics and common sense - these and patience are your best defenses.
Personal Guidelines:
PayPal or MO are both welcome.
No trouble with Canadian or overseas orders. Just please be aware of the extra time and postage costs involved.
Significantly lower rating ships/pays first - this goes both ways.

I've got a buddy who I directed to Bartertown so he could trade/sell some of WH40K minis, and got ripped off twice here. Lost about $150 worth of minis to people with higher trade ratings than him. Problem is his computer got a virus through his ISP and he lost all of his old e-mails with these sandboxes*, so they got away clean. The sandboxes* he was selling to only had ratings of 12-18. But he had a lower trade rating, sent first and never got anything.

Also, I have talked with a shady trader here that I know thru another forum. He basically told me he felt that it was ok to cheat people. Noone knew who he was and there wasn't a lot anyone could do about it. He also has a trade rating in that range.

I remember a Woody Allen movie, can't tell you which one now, but it had some dialogue that went:

OTHER ACTOR: "You know, they have a word for people who think everyone is out to get them."

WOODY: "Yeah, observant."

I don't think you are being paranoid. Just more observant.

We have filters that get rid of most bad things. And if the guy had PMs the mods may have been able to find them for him.

All he had was the e-mails from these guys, no PMs at all. I had asked that as soon as he told me. He couldn't remember their e-mail addresses or names either, and they hadn't responded to his post on the message boards. It really sucked.

Like anything it's buyer beware but I don't put a whole lot of stock in guys with any ratings under 25 or so unless I know some of the people on their ref list. That goes a long way with me. If I see names I recognize then I'm a LOT more forgiving with new people, since I trust those ratings more. Sorry about your friend though.

thats why i always try to handle all trades thru pm. if you lose them, lin or 1 of the other mods can restore them.

you isp can retrive your emails, unless their servers took a dump. in which case you're probably sol, and should change isp's because this 1 is so small it can't protect you. or to lazy or cheap too. still poor customer service.

It was a free ISP, provided to college students for their use as part of their tuition, fees and such. Customer Service at an institute of hyer edjucation? Yeah, right.
 :eek3dance: :puke: :beer8.bmp:

Seriously, I don't know how they even keep their servers up and running period.
