What is your favourite book to read?

Echo on Dan Abnett. Pariah is good. A little confusing at first, but after you realize what is going on it is a very good read. Can't wait until Penitent comes out (book 2). Fell Cargo is good also, but I liked Riders of the Dead better for the Warhammer setting.

I still enjoy the Horus Heresy books, but they seem to have become a bit aimless lately. It is hit or miss whether the books draw me in or not.

I still dust off the Lord of the Rings books occasionally.

For science fiction, I tend to like the writings of Larry Niven. Some of it is pretty hard science fiction, but there are some great ideas in it.

The Sharpe books by Cornwell are great (and Abnett's mimic of them in Gaunt's Ghosts also). But, I really liked Cornwell's Warriors/Saxon books.

I was reading Robert Jordan's books and the Game of Thrones, but they both kind of lost my interest. So did Harry Potter. I might still catch them all up at some point, but they all three just kind of droned on for me.

Thanks for some of the new recommendations, though. I might have to check some of them out.

Wow, such a variety of novels and authors.
Lord of the rings I find is such a classic and a must read also.

I just finished "Killing Lincoln" by Bill O'Reilly. I didn't READ it, though. I did the book on CD.
Not sure I could have sat through reading it, but it was entertaining to listen to. Bill read it himself and, while he's not the best reader, he's passable.

I also did the Harry Potter series on CD. Jim Dale's a FANTASTIC reader.
I KNOW I'd have never finished reading the series, as I think she's a horrible writer (good ideas, poor execution). Jim made it enjoyable.
While I'm at it, I also did "Around the World in 80 Days" read by Jim Dale. He's great with that one, too.

A friend got me into books on CD and now I love them. They're great for my daily 90(ish) minute commute.

Yeah with long commutes Books on disk is a good way to go. Personally I cant do it as I am a more visual learner than audio so I would never be able to get any understanding of a book if I was listening to it. But my mother swears by it. She must go through 3-4 books a week in her hour (each way) commute to work each day.

I tried audiobooks once, so honestly I haven't given it a chance. Can anyone recommend some audiobooks other than the ones already listed? It would make things a lot easier as I tend to travel a lot (usually biking, walking or public transit) and reading a book while walking/on a bus has made me miss many stops LOL.

Even more entertaining than audio books are audio dramas. Black Library has some great ones (Raven's Flight and The Dark King/The Lightning Tower being my favorites). They have sounds effects and the actor does different voices. Very fun.

Oh my god, I tried listening to one of the free samples of a BL "audio drama" and turned it off after two minutes. I couldn't stop cringing/laughing I thought it was so bad.

I really enjoyed The audiobook of The Golden Compass. I only heard the first book but it was great.

Neuromancer by William Gibson. The birth of Cyberpunk for me. I've read it a half-dozen times.

Also a really good series: the Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard K Morgan (Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, and Woken Furies) Really good post-human stuff, gives you a LOT to think about.

I have a few favorite books:
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert A. Heinlein
Starship Troopers - Robert A. Heinlein
Christine - Stephen King

I am also a huge fan of R.A. Salvatore's Drizzit Do-Urden series of books (which I am still trying to finish the whole lot of them).

Just as a side note my wife and I both enjoy the Monk books (based on the USA series), the Psyche books (also based on the USA series) and the Charlie Moon mystery series by James D. Doss.

I have to echo Imp522's recommendation of
Ready Player One..by E. Cline.

I read the book in 2 days, shorting myself on sleep to get it done.

A MUST READ for anyone who did RPGs and arcade games in the 80's.

I probably bored my wife to tears reading excerpts to her.

Oh, and another belated recommendation..

The Deed Of Paksennarion by Elizabeth Moon.

Non-stereotypical female protagonist in Swords n Sorcery setting.

Hey GP, do you watch the show Psych? I work at a bookstore and see those books all the time, but I didn't want to pick one up for fear that they don't represent the characters from the show accurately enough.

I saw William Gibson and Larry Niven, they are always safe bets for a good read. Orson Scott Card's Enders Game series as well as the Shadow books are great. I have recently been going more action/adventure and like the Clive Cussler novels for a quick read that doesn't require too much thought. I will also throw in my hat for LoTR and Hobbit. I read them about once every year or so.

I also read the Dresden File books but I have slowed down after the 3rd. I find the writing to be a tad on the juvenile side at times, I think the 15 year old version of me would enjoy this more than the 35 year old version.

I did notice some books on the list that I am unfamiliar with and will have to check out.

Dresden files actualy gets better with the later books. the 1st 3 were what he needed to get the character down and set up the world. also to grow/develope as a writer.
