Tactical Mini Game
I am trying to find the most tactical and sensibile mini's game out right now. I get so frustrated with 40k's rules or caster kills in WM. I am just wondering if any of you gamers out there feel the same way? I would like to try any game that seems to make sense and has a good solid rule base.
Thanks,
Kala

Re: Tactical Mini Game
The answer that you seek is probably Dream Pod 9's Heavy Gear.
I am always in the market for weird and wonderful GW oddbitz and ephemera. PM me if you have something old/weird/rare.

Re: Tactical Mini Game
I have heard good things about Infinity; my issue is I live in this anti-gaming black hole city. So I am in a gaming group of about 10 total people and we all want to get into a new game. Which means we would have to buy all of our games/mini through online stores, we also want models that look semi-decent.
I don't like the card system, I feel if you didn't reshuffle it would be better. Although after reading the debate about 40k VS WM/H I do slightly feel better about playing WM. The tactics are pretty nice if you know how to use your own army and abilities, just the knocking out a caster to win every time bothers me.tordeck wrote:Have you tried Malifaux?

Re: Tactical Mini Game
The rules for Heavy Gear are available for free right now on DriveThruRPG.
I'm not a big fan of the game, but it is probably the best tactical wargame out there. There's lots of smaller skirmish options (MERCS, Infinity, Malifaux), but for combined arms combat you'll be hard-pressed to beat it. Unlike most games, it's action/reaction based, rather than my turn/your turn, and you can build army lists to target specific enemy capabilities without generating "death star" units.

Don't play caster kill. Play scenarios. Make Caster Kill an option, but not auto-win.

Re: Tactical Mini Game
for a free set of rules, look up Savage World's Showdwon by Pinnale Entertainment Group. It's a rule system that you can use any minis for. It's points based so if you can create what ever world, genre and tech standard you want.
here's a link to the free download for the rules, troop builder and 2 scenarios. all free.

Re: Tactical Mini Game
I'm going to advocate for Infinity as well.
Tactical game. A HUGE part of the game is the idea that turns are relative. You get to shoot at anyone crossing your line of fire during their movement. So, setting up line of sight and firing lanes is crucial to success.
Rules are free via downloads on the game site. As are the army lists and an AMAZING army generator.
Games do not have to be 'caster kill.' There are three official scenarios (and an entire new book filled with 16 more next month) as well as plenty of player made ones. And, unlike WM, losing your leader does not totally amputate your army (just mostly).
A starter army per person (around $40) makes very solid starting points for everyone. And a full sized, 300 point game is usually 10 models per person.

Re: Tactical Mini Game
I don't feel like that really matters... I've never felt like scenarios are more than pushing casters together, or occasionally giving an advantage to pieces that force/prevent movementalienated_one wrote:kalamire wrote:I have heard good things about Infinity; my issue is I live in this anti-gaming black hole city. True, we love life, not because we are used to living but because we are used to loving. There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.

For future reference; he's creating alternate rules add-ons to turn it into a "weird west" or to add fantasy elements, etc. With those in place, you might find it more your style. I know I'm looking forward to some "weird west."

Re: Tactical Mini Game
Weird West would be neat, I do like the setting of WM/Hordes and Malifaux I just wish the rules were more sound for my taste. I guess until I figure something out I'm going to keep giving WM a go.MagickalMemories wrote:Me, either... but I really like the system.kalamire wrote:I've seen it played it did look interesting but not quite for me. Re: Tactical Mini Game
the savage worlds showdown link i posted above has rules for weird west. it was created by shane hensley, who created deadlands and deadlands; hell on earth. [post apoc].
it was based on the great rail wars, which was a minis game set in the weird west of the rail barons fignting it out. it then evolved into a generic system, to allow you to create your own systems from pulp, to fantasy, to modern, to futuristic..to a mix. all of the genres balance because they use the same basic points system. you just provide the minis and story. you can use whatever minis you want to fit the game.
