WienerDog101 - Backout

Post by travis_b7 »

Hello, all.

I always hoped I could avoid this, but in this situation, I felt I needed to make a backout report. Alex and I made an agreement for me to purchase a Realm of Battle gameboard and some additional terrain pieces for a set price. Over several days of communication, Alex continued to alter the terms of the agreement, in which many I was quite reasonable (such as inclusion of shipping costs). Unfortunately, Alex suddenly backed out from the trade. I assume his parents made him back out, but I was never given an actual reason, so I can't be certain.

I'm not posting this because I want him reprimanded or whatever, but rather as a learning tool for others. When you ask a certain price, don't expect offers greater than that. I've had very few experiences with new users not reading the rules or following the "spirit" of Bartertown, but Alex was the exception. I hope he eventually returns when he can be a more mature trader, and I hope others will take heed when posting and trading to do so in a respectful and professional manner.

I would include his original post, but he removed the subject line and body of text. Also, I know he had other trades going on with other items, and I'd like to know if anyone else had a similar experience.

-Travis

So, for $150 shipped, you have three (3) Bastions (including all parts) and the Citadel Realms of Battle Gameboard with carrying case?

Let me know - I may be interested.

Yes but the prices might changed a little, I'm getting many offers, and trust me this stuff did not come cheap but I'll email you about further offers. Sounds good? Also shipping depends on where you live and how fast you want it to arrive, I'm not really sure how this whole thing works. I'm new.

Not a problem being new. I emailed you as well after seeing your email address in the post. I'd gladly pay for slow-as-Christmas shipping.

Bartertown is pretty easy to work with. Just make sure you read over the rules; a lot of the new traders don't right away, and it can cause problems down the road.

Trading references are king on Bartertown, no matter how good your eBay references are (no way to validate that it is actually you. Makes sense?) Rule of thumb is lower reference pays/ships first, higher pays/ships second. However, with this, I'd gladly pay the shipping cost up front (with tracking) and pay for the actual product after arrival.

$150 for the Bastions/Gameboard + actual shipping. UPS might be your best bet for such a large item cheaply.

Let me know your thoughts. Also, welcome to Bartertown!

Travis

Do I have to send you the product before you pay? Don't have a problem with it just asking. I'm sorry but how do you know someone is telling the truth and not scamming though?

Thanks,

Bartertown references. The number in parentheses by my username is my trader rating. You can click it to read feedback (like eBay) from other users including time/date stamps to know how recent it is.

I always use Paypal to protect myself and the seller/buyer on the other end, and there is a great community here explaining how to submit a mail fraud report (if you send/someone sends something without payment or completed trade, its a felony!)

Where (state) are you located? I'm in Georgia - just trying to get a handle on what shipping costs would be.

Thanks again! Hope this answered some of your questions.

Bartertown is free to use entirely. No percentage. This is why so many people use it before eBay (you'll see it called "feeBay" all the time here).

Thanks!

Awesome, I have someone also wanting to buy the game board, would you like to up the price at all? It's fine if you say no he hasn't not replied yet. And would you want the stuff first or could you pay me first?

Also I have craters and the destroyed space marine Rhino piece that is sold in stores, it is painted! It's an extra fifty dollars, or you can buy 1 or the other for $25 to add to the bundle.

I'd like to do the gameboard + Bastions at $150 since that was your initial price (wish I could do the Tau army, too, but my fiance is already going to kill me over this ). I'd be willing to pay shipping upfront, or if you are covering that, I'll pay a percentage upfront as long as tracking is provided.

Thanks!

Let me know what their offer is. I'd hate to start a bidding war I can offer to pay through paypal's "gift" service (personal, whatever its called), and no fees are taken out through that.

Thanks!

If you want to combine the scenery pack with the planet strike you can get the planet strike codex, the three bastions, and walls that go with the Imperial Strongpoint for 225 - 250?

I got a message before 1 actually he seems interested in buying almost all the scenery and board, I'll contact you on what he does, if he wants to buy the Realm of Battle Gameboard with everything I'm going to let him buy, other than that you pretty much won.

Well, I will warn you against this. That would be considered a back out, as I've already moved the money to paypal for the board and bastions. I would have to leave a backout report, which I don't want to do to a new trader.

playing members against each other after promising someone else a product can come off as underhanded. That said, i'd still like the board and bastions. My address is below. I'll ask if a friend of mine wants the extra scenery.

Sounds good you did win though, so I'll try and ship it to you this week, if you would be interested in buying some more scenery it would be a better deal, the Imperial StrongPoint looks great compared to just three bastions, I've attached a pic. The entire cost would go from 150 (starting) to 200, but it is worth it. When will you send the money?

Re: Warhammer 40k Tau Army for Sale ($$)

I don't think I can do the extra scenery. I'm already having to buy $150 in computer parts for my fiance to make up for this purchase

I will be providing:
$150 Paypal

IN EXCHANGE FOR:
1 (one) Realm of Battle Gameboard (6 pieces) including carry case
3 (three) Imperial Bastions including all parts

I can pay as soon as they arrive and I am able to open them. Send your paypal address in a message when they ship. Also, I'll advise insurance and delivery confirmation/tracking with a shipment like this. I recently had an order of around $80 get lost in the mail, and I had to fully refund the buyer - hurts when you forget insurance.

Please confirm the above, and we'll go from there.

Thanks!

Travis

Okay but after I ship I would like to be payed at least half does that sound fair? Also shipping will be about $70 due to the huge size and quantity of the items, I would rather your items stay and arrive in good condition.

I would rather that you pay first, I do not want to be responsible for messing up the address either, would you mind sending just a pm with only your address, no punctuation left out. Also what about refunds?

This is something that you'll have to work out in later deals up front. As I mentioned, I'm really interested in this deal. I thought we had worked out $150 for the gameboard set and 3 bastions. As I said, I can do a prepayment percentage, but I'm not comfortable sending over $150 to someone who has no Bartertown review. This has nothing against you; I just don't trust people without a good reputation. I've worked hard to build my 100+ reviews, and you'll have to do the same.

Bartertown is NOT eBay. In no way is it an auction site. If you list a price, that is what you should expect people to offer. If you want offers, ask for "best offer by X:XX will get it" or something similar.

You have to consider this from my point. I have no idea who you are, nor do I have any other person's word saying you are a good trader. You are asking me to give $150 in exchange for some products BEFORE you ship. Again, its not that I don't trust you, I just don't trust anyone.

Bartertown is just a forum, so there isn't a method set up for refunds. Its worked out between users in a trade. Usually, if an item is lost in the mail, the sender refunds the money/items (this is why insurance is important). If items are received and deemed unsatisfactory, they can be returned if both parties agree, though usually you pay your own shipping in that case.

Lets get this deal worked out. Bartertown is dead simple to use - everything through PMs, no fees, etc.

I prefer keeping all discussion in the PMs when possible to keep a record on Bartertown of all trades until they are complete.

Who are you planning on shipping with? Ask the person you're paying with how insurance works with that carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEx, whatever). Usually, you'll have to file an insurance claim with the carrier as long as you purchased insurance. They look into the claim, and if it is valid, they give you the insurance amount.

What percentage/cost of shipping are you asking for? That is something that we have to have figured out up front as well BEFORE you ship.

Thanks,

Travis (address below)

If you have any more questions, please let me know. Also, you may want to ship in two packages rather than consolidating into one if that would be cheaper. Realm of Battle board is the heavy part, and I think shipping should be under $40 for it.

Let me know if this is still on. I can pay for partial shipping due to the size.

You agreed to pay full shipping I gave you the advantage here because I know your reasonable, but you held me to my end, now it's your turn. I'm also giving you an advantage because I've already gotten two other offers for more money so... it's your turn please. I know it's large but you did agree, I have it in one of your messages. Now do you want that set or not!??! jk no but seriously

Re: Warhammer 40k Tau Army for Sale ($$)

I agreed to pay for slow shipping if you were worried about shipping costs being incredibly high. You then, however, stated that you would rather cover the cost of shipping. My offer to cover shipping was assuming low shipping (under $35). I'm offering to pay a portion of the shipping as well as avoid the Paypal fees. I can do $30~ in shipping, which I can pay upfront.

Every time I asked about shipping, you never quoted a price, and since you said:
Im in CA if the shipping is low I don't want you to have to pay for it
I assumed shipping was included with no mention of it. Again, I'm offering to pay a portion of the shipping with this upfront.

Metaphorically speaking if I said that was not reasonable to fit my standards would you file a complaint against me? I just can't afford to lose that much money on this product it's real price is probably $250 so I don't think that you've held up your end of the bargain then sir.

Re: Warhammer 40k Tau Army for Sale ($$)

More than likely, I would post a "backout" trader report. This isn't good or bad in your standing, but just lets others know that they should be specific in their discussions with you.

I would suggest in future dealings that you be more precise in your posts AND your messages. Explicitly say that you are covering shipping OR not, don't just assume. If I say $150 total and you do not refute that, I assume that includes shipping.

Would you be willing to do $200 including shipping? (THIS is how BT usually works)
- 1 RoB Gameboard (6 pieces+carry case)
- 3 Bastions (all pieces)
- shipping

And you can't base me holding up my "end of the bargain " based on retail price. You offered $150, I accepted. Miscommunication happens, and it has obviously happened here. Shipping was discussed but never finalized. Something we should both continue to do in ALL trades.

Travis,

I greatly appreciate your help I think that the deal will go through if I receive 100 when I ship, to cover any shipping costs, more than likely over $50, and $100 after you receive the Game Board and Bastions, is that fair? And trust me I don't wanna scam anyone I'm too young to die!

Re: Warhammer 40k Tau Army for Sale ($$)

Alright, so its $100 when you ship, then $100 when it arrives?

- RoB Gameboard with Carry Case
- 3 Imperial Bastions (I assumed they weren't the Chaos ones )

I think I can do that. I know you don't want to scam people, but it does happen (ALWAYS read references when they are available - even those with higher trading ratings can scam - see thedropzone).

Let me know your paypal address; as promised, I'll send it as a gift/cash advance to avoid the normal fees.

Thanks for working this deal out. I'll leave a glowing review to start your trading future here on Bartertown as soon as the items arrive.

Would it be possible to give an extra 10 or 20 dollars for the shipping of the bastions? Only what you can spare, it is already 47.50 to send the game board to you. Since I am a kid, this does not matter to me but they feel that in every deal/bargain the buyer always pays the exact amount of money for the item being shipped.

Re: Warhammer 40k Tau Army for Sale ($$)

by travis_b7
Ok, so I completely understand your parents' concern. Trust me. I have a set as well, and when I started on BT, they were nervous about it also.

However, I will point out how this is working in your favor in comparison to eBay. If you were to sell this EXACT deal on ebay for $200 shipped, this is what would happen.
1) Buyer pays Paypal for the items.
2) Paypal HOLDS your money until the BUYER confirms it arrives. You don't get any of the money until AFTER the buyer states the package has shipped, not even money to cover shipping.
3) After the item ships, you'd get around $180 or so, since eBay takes a hefty fee.

I can't pay in full up front without knowing the exact shipping cost, but you don't know the shipping cost without me paying. Puts us both in a bind. If your parents wish to contact me, they may do so through here. As I said, read the reviews from other Bartertown users, then read THEIR reviews, and you'll see that dozens of trustworthy people have deemed me a trustworthy trader/buyer. Honestly, I prefer this system over eBay's any day.

IF, and only if I decide to, I pay full shipping, all cash up front, I cannot send the money as a "gift" in paypal. Paypal only protects payments that are made on the commercial side, so there will be a small fee (which is automatically deducted - eBay bills you later for their fees on top of the paypal fees). Shouldn't be more than $10 or so total, but I'm not covering that if I'm covering the entire cost of shipping. I usually split shipping for more expensive purchases, but I might be willing to make an exception here depending on the cost.

My apologies if I come across as rude, but again, I don't know who you are. You could just be a 45 year old using a "parents" routine as a scam (doubtful, as you seem genuine in your efforts to sell - just playing Devil's Advocate). Let me know what total shipping cost would be so we can figure all this up. Again, good learning experience - always know what you are willing to accept for shipping (you'd have to know this upfront for eBay when you post).

Figure up the total cost ($150+shipping) and I'll let you know what I can do. Please also let your parents know that there are rules we follow on here as well, and the trading rating is part of it. I DO understand their concern, which is why I was originally okay with the paying half up front. We can work something out. Again, get me a final cost, and we'll go from there.

Travis, I realize that but they feel that the buyer needs to pay full shipping for the product. And they do know the rules. And your not being mean and I'm trying not to be mean either ok? Also I need the money first. On ebay you get the money first I know from A LOT of experience.

Re: Warhammer 40k Tau Army for Sale ($$)
Sent: Wed Jun 27, 2012 9:10 am
by travis_b7
My friend, I just sold three items on eBay a week ago. You get a "pending" payment until your ebay seller rating is high. No money enters your Paypal account for your own use until the item has shipped - Paypal holds the money to ensure the safety of both parties - buyer has to put the money upfront, but the seller doesn't get it until he/she has the product delivered.

As I said, I can pay in one payment upfront, but I cannot do it as a "gift" payment, so there will be light Paypal fees ($6 for this order, I believe). Only reason I cannot do it as a gift payment is to keep the Paypal protection plan (if something gets lost, etc, its covered under their protection so I can get my money back for the purchase - same way it works on eBay).

Just let me know those shipping costs. If you think it can stay around $60 or so, that is fine with me.

You lied about ebay first of all and second of all you don't even wanna pay for shipping, you can buy it on ebay for +100

Re: Warhammer 40k Tau Army for Sale ($$)
Sent: Thu Jun 28, 2012 10:08 am
by travis_b7
What do you mean, I "lied" about eBay? If you are a new seller on eBay, you don't get the money through Paypal until the item is marked shipped. Seriously. Just did that a week ago. Paypal has a "pending" period until you are a seller with a proven track record.

Secondly, I AGREED to pay for shipping. I was just waiting for an estimate or actual cost. I'd rather get everything free, but that's simply because I like free stuff. Does that mean I wouldn't pay for it? No. I was willing to pay ACTUAL shipping costs after we agreed that you were giving me such a good deal on the gameboard/bastion set. You mentioned it would be around $48 for the gameboard and $20 or so more for the bastions, coming to $70. This is, with the total cost, about $220, or just $20 more than the $200 we originally estimated.

All I have done throughout this deal is try and work out a final cost/solution for us. I'm willing to pay upfront as a single payment since Paypal has a system to protect both buyers and sellers. I've been honest with you throughout this process, and now I feel as if I'm being stabbed in the back for absolutely no reason.

If your parents do not wish you to sell these items for whatever reason, be honest. Don't claim that I've lied to you or anything else, as I've told you information as I know it and as I've experienced.

As I said, I'm very interested in this deal at $150+actual shipping. If you are ready to calm down and move forward, I will be here.

Travis

I will assume, since you've read the message but have not responded, you have fully backed out.

You are being extremely kind not giving him a negative reference after all that. You bent over backwards trying to make the deal work.

I felt that, since no funds/items were exchanged, a bad trader ref was not deserved. Had I sent any money via paypal, I would have, of course, filed a BTR. Hopefully others will learn from my experience as I have.

Legitimate Back Outs are eligible for negative references.

@MM: If I were to file a BTR, could this thread just be moved to that forum, or would you rather me make a new post there?

Thanks!

Backouts/deadbeats AND BTRs are eligible for negative references. Nothing needs to be moved.

If you don't have your Location listed in your User Control Panel, why not take a second and update it? It will let your trading partners know where you are from the beginning.

If no trade was made, this is not eligible for a BTR, only a Back Out.

@MM and Ironhide - thanks for the info.

It seems that Alex has dropped off the radar here. I'm going to pass on leaving a bad reference, and just leave this post here. Maybe in a few years, when he's matured, he'll come back and be an asset to our community. Until then, I'll keep using Bartertown as usual while being a little more suspect of who I deal with and how.
