Old PM's missing/deleted question

Per MM"s posting in the following Bad Trade posting It brought up a question for me.

viewtopic.php?f=34&t=99239

You stated that BT does not randomly delete PM's but an issue I have that I didn't realize happens is that if you have a string of PM's and you delete all but the newest, the next time you open that PM you will only see the newest PM.

It latest will not retain the history of all you older PM's unless those PM's are physically in you inbox.

I found this out the hard was during my bulk order to the UK for you and Porkslime when I get you guys shipping information and am used to other sites retaining pm history with out having to keep the old PM's. So I deleted my old ones and when I went back to the newest on to get the shipping info it was now gone.

WHich is why I had to ask for it a second time.

Not sure if this is something you guys were aware of or can fix (or even care) but I can see how it could cause some confusion to new people or the unwary...

We are aware.
AFAIK, there is no other way. It's how phpbb does this.
Back in the day, we didn't even have that much. If you wanted to look up the PM history, you had to open each PM individually.
Oh, GOD, that could get awful.

The history now shows all of YOUR PM's and all of THEIR PM's that have not previously been deleted by you.

Man I'm glad you posted this. I had no idea, but was planning to go through and clean up my PM folders. I'll wait until all my current deals are done now.

This is exactly why I posted it in the first place because of the discussion going on in that link. ;)

I was actually going to use this as a segway into seeing if we good get a sticky put up in the Info section for things to know about the boards (not rules per say) that will help people's time here be less stressful.

This is one of those good things to know that might come back to bite you later if you weren't aware of it...I know you would still have to "READ" it but at least if someone does it and complains we can just point them to the FACTS section and say "next time read the boards"

:D

With the ability to create (unlimited?) folders, you can have huge numbers of PMs on Btown. Potentially, you can create a separate folder for each trade, and never run out of PM space. Then, just delete upon completion.

Keep the PMs until you don't need them!

There IS a limit, John...
You can have a total of 12 folders, including your Inbox, Sent messages & Outbox folders.
Each has a limit of 600 messages.

By popular demand.

Oh, OK, good to know.

Still, 12x600 = 7,200 PMs. That's a lot of PMs.

If you assume 35 PMs/deal, that's room for 2000+ deals, so it's practically unlimited. ;)
