Why oh why am I thinking this?

As some of you might recall, earlier this year I went through a lot of posts discussing building a Tau force. Well, I've acquired a pretty sizable force...and now I'm wanting to go with either Eldar or Necrons. Gaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!! Talk me out of it. Please.

I'll talk you out of the Tau force...
You can send it to me.
Don't get Necrons. At least not until they get updated. They are a little tough in the new edition.
Don't get Eldar. They're sissies. Really.

Have you actually started building / painting, or is it all in boxes?
If you've done some work on it, then stick with it. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.
Personally, once I collect an army of any significance, I keep it if only to avoid having to re-acquire later.

It's all still in boxes. I haven't had a chance to get my modeling table set up yet, so that's my hold up right now.

Tau aren't exactly a cakewalk in 5th ed either... they got hit pretty hard.

Yeah, I have played against them recently twice. I lost to them with my Necrons. Everything seemed tactically sound, and it was close. But, I admit I lost to the Tau.

Wait a couple of months and trade your Tau for Space Wolves!

Never liked the space puppies.

Armies I have had before:
Tyranids - my first army ever. Not really interested in digging back in to them
Necrons - when the only models were warriors, immortals, and a lord
Eldar - generic craftworld - wish I hadn't gotten rid of these
These were all 2nd edition. I played nids again when 3rd edition first came out - had a huge order deliver from the warstore. Man it was fun putting those guys together. But don't really want to get into the bugs again.

What do you want?
Do you want a force that's relatively easy to assemble & paints up really nice?
Do you want something that packs a punch?
IMO, Karl's wrong about the daisy-eaters.
Eldar can really pack a punch in 5e, if kitted out "right."
The good thing about "right" is that there are a number of "right" ways to kit them out... Wave Serpent spam being one of them.
If you want to choose the army that'll pack more ofa punch, choose Eldar.
Then again, Tau will probably be "tough" again, whenever they get a new codex (before Eldar, probably).

I haven't played since 3rd edition with my nids, so I'm going to have a lot of learning to do either way. For me, I like the Eldar models - I've always liked the aspect warriors. Not so much the tanks, but I've never been a tank fan in 40K.
Do I want to pack a punch? Sure. I'd like to be able to hold my own after I get some tactics down without keeling over into making a space marine army.

Oh. I have NO idea what Eldar are like. I don't go into
those kinds of bars...
I just said that they were sissies. They look like sissies. Nothing else. IMO

, I guess it would make them cooler if they were kick-a$$ sissies. Still sissies though.

I squeaked out a tie vs Tau with my Sisters monday night.
MAN.. I HATE Tau.. all those fiddly special rules, astounding shooting with fabulous weapons..wargear that lets you break game rules (looking at you, JSJ, markerlights).. cleaned my clock by the end of second turn..
I only squeaked a tie cause he ignored a Rhino and I was able to contest an objective.. but by that point I had 2 rhinos, and 6 sisters alive. And NOTHING else.
Stick with the Tau.... keep them out of Ohio..

Your problem is that you went up against them with sisters... who are great at short range firefights, but not at all good at long range (unless you're taking 3 exorcists, and even then...)
Tau do terribly on the tournament circuit, and aren't really a competitive army. The transports are overpriced, the firewarriors are overpriced, and crisis suits are next to useless in 5th ed due to TLoS . Granted, you're playing against them with sisters, which is one of the oldest codexes out there, but just about any army with infiltrators, deep strikers, or mobile H2H units can clean up tau.

question #1. do you paint your armies? as in paint, not just slap on 3 colors
question #2. Are you in the game to win or have nice looking models?
question #3. Have you looked at the most recent version of the armies? do any stand out as your "play style"?
All three of the armies you listed have suffered some in the newest version of the rules, I personally feel the eldar felt the sting the least of those armies. We all know that Tau will be getting a new codex. This army was recieved with alot of enthusiasm by the players, and has already seen a influx of models and rules compared to either the necrons or Eldar. Until these armies geta new codex I feel that you are going to have to stick to your guns or adapt your playstyle to fit a "winning" army.
IMHO I'd say go with your gut instinct, if you are at heart an Eldar player you will have more fun with that army than the other two. I myself was a Tau player, until a trade deal came along that let me play the army I wanted, and I currently play today even though they have suffered the most out of the big 4 chaos gods (I play Thousand suns) I've adopted my playstyle a bit to fit the feel of the army, and by no means to I consistantly win. I do however have more fun than many who simply play to win.

If you plan on avoiding their tanks, avoid the army entirely. I can't envision ANY Eldar army that will be successful without tanks/transports.
