A question about Space Hulk...

Hello Fellow Bartertowners,

After watching Bell of Lost Souls for a while, I have been seeing all the rumors about Space Hulk. Now that GW has finally anounced that Space Hulk will be back in limited quantities early in September, I have a really simple question or two.

Was the old version of Space Hulk fun? What was it like? Pros and Cons? Any kind of information that will help make my decision would be MOST welcome.

I was maybe thinking about picking up a copy of the game, but I would like to know if it's worth the $99.00 price tag.

Thanks in advance for any opinions, answers, flame wars, etc... :-D

Karl

I know nothing of the original space hulk, but can assure you that the $99 price tag is worth it. Assuming it's 40k scale, you will spend more then the price of the game just buying 10 terminators.

Remember, the old SH termies were the simple beetle-back models.
The genestealers were the same.

The game was fun, it took some experience for the marines to win.

The board game was still easier than the old dos based computer version. I still have that hanging around.

1st ed. was excellent (though expansion "Genestealer" is debatable), 2nd ed a bit less so as a game but was a bit snazzier. Playing Termies could be tough - one mistake could end it all, and the dice could do for you too.

My bad. Apologies offered.

As to Space Hulk itself. I thought it was a fun game. It can definitely get that overwhelming feeling for the marines player if the genestealers keep pulling big blips, but can be underwhelming if the genestealers keep pulling empty blips. It is a fun game, and used to be a great way to get minis. Looking at the minis in the new box, it looks like, at least from the stealer side, they don't want you using them in 40K.

You know the funny part about this is the fact that everybody said the same thing about the Space Marines in the AoBR box. And those terminators are worth virtually nothing. Although, I suspect with this being a limited release, those miniatures might keep some value. I am still sitting on the fence. $99 is a LOT of cash. The box contents DO look rather nice. Are the mechanics of the game like 40K or are they completely different? How hard are the rules (at least the previous versions)?

Any more insights...

I would like to know more about the game and less about the price and the miniatures.

Thanks guys!

Karl

The rules weren't like any of the previous editions; but there were similiarities.
Over-watch started in SH.
Termies having haigher movment rates than the slow ponderous marines. The SM had action points to spend on moving, turning, firing, going into over-watch. setting bombs, downloading computer info, opening and closing doors/hatches.

The models are all one piece and don't come with the round 40k bases, but are the same scale. Each model is different and no duplicates.

They are multi piece models.

Holy crap! That is the first sprue pic I have seen! All the others were completed models. That makes it even better IMHO.

Man!
What GW site did you get THAT picture from? It's not under the Space Hulk header, that's for sure! LOL
Either way, nice find.

So, here's my take on the minis...

Love 'em.

I think the poses are great. My favorites are the Wolverine posed LC Termie and the PFist Termie ripping up the floor tiles. VERY cool.
Unfortunately, while I give GW points for being ambitious, I think the Stealer models fail, mostly.
I mean, the poses and everything are cool, but the details on the models seems to pale in comparison to our regular Genestealers.

Now, some have complained that the bases vs. board tiles mean that, if you base your SM models for 40K, they won't fit on the board. Looks like this might be the case. Kinda sucks, too. It would've been nice if GW had provided 40mm bases for the Termies (or not) and enlarged the board sections. I mean, at this price, it's not like they aren't making a killing off of each one.... because you KNOW they're probably made in China (which bothers me. The last Chinese made products were utter rubbish, although the pics on the site looked great. Let's PRAY that the same fiasco doesn't happen here). I know they didn't, because they didn't want to interfere with their REGULAR Termie sales (probably), but it would have STILL looked better.

All in all, based only on what I've seen via the internet, I give it an 8 on excecution of models and a 1 on price (so far... opinion subject to change as information becomes more readily available).

Eric,

That photo is from the GW site. If you look at the Space Hulk page, there are a few other pages added (like "Opening the box" etc...).

Actually, I LIKE the fact that the models are more characterful towards the game. Yeah, our household plays both Space Marines and Tyranids, BUT we already have a ton of genestealers and Terminators (thanks to the last two boxed 40K sets). If I was to get the game, I would probably just use the models in it exclusively for Space Hulk. I guess you could say that it devalues the game a little (and it does), but on the other hand it makes those figures that much cooler because you can paint them up any way you want. Even something other than Ultramarine colors.

So, Space Hulk has overwatch (they mention it on one of the new webpages). And what is a blip (in terms of the game)?

So far, I would give it an 8.5 for the models and a 2 for the price. The price is not too out of sorts with the price of just about anything on the market today. Nothing is cheap except me trolling here on Bartertown.

Everything about the new version of the game looks great, except the price tag. GW seems to like to bankrupt folks with its boardgames. Remember the pricetag on HeroQuest and BattleMasters when they were new?
I never played the original Space Hulk games, and am very conflicted on whether to buy this version or not. The thing that nakes it VERY hard to decide is the fact that the rat-bastards who thought this up decided to make it a limited edition run. If you don't preorder it now, you probably won't get a copy. GW's distribution of limited edition stuff like this is awful, often shafting independent retailers at the last moment to fulfill a plethora of direct preorders. My LGS was shafted out of the Harry the Hammer figs they had ordered in this way.

I can't see myself using the Terminators in my Marine army. Sure, the poses are awesome, but modding them onto 40mm bases would make them unusable for the board game. Gah!

Assuming they don't change it from earlier rules...

The genestealer player pulls blip markers and places them at entry points. He moves them like they are models, but this way the space marine player does not know what odds he is facing. Blips in previous editions ranged from 0 models to 6 models. When marines got a visual, the blip would be flipped over to reveal how many stealers, and the models would be placed.
