Missing Posts

Greetings,

I am still fairly new here... I had posted a number of posts in different forums with things I wanted to get rid of. With the exception of one (Under EPIC), all of the others have been deleted or seem to be missing? I had once under 40K, LOTR, and WHF with lists I would have to retype. Some of the items on each list were actively in progress of sales as well. I just went to update them and they were gone.

As people put up trade topics the older ones go down. New trade topics are posted very quickly on here, it's not uncommon to come back in 2 hours and see 20 new trade topics in some forums.

Also, you may want to read the forum rules. Are the links in your sig your personal business?

I had the sam problem, a Moderator informed me that the posts are deleted after about 10 days or so, wich I find odd especially if it takes you 2 hrs to list your have/wants only to see them removed after 10 days. someone should look into that I have been with Barter Town for a few years now it was not like this before, I thought everthing was deleted starting Jan 2009. lmk what you hear.

Please, tell me which Moderator told you this.
If you were to look, RIGHT NOW, at the oldest post in the 40K thread, you'd see that it's from Jan. 19. That is over a month old.

With the exception of SOME spam ads, we do not generally DELETE anything. We have a special "Mods Only" folder that we sometimes move "Bad Posts" to... but out and out deletion is rare.
Trade ads, however, do have a lifespan and, while we don't DELETE them, they do eventually go through a sort of "Falling off" process where they're culled by the site.

It probably is ten days, but only if the post gets no replies. The ten day rule probably resets once a post is made in the topic.

I asked, so I could start a dialogue with said Mod on the subject. I wanted to know which one of them to give crap to.

I see that it wasn't a Mod but was, actually, one of the "Main Men," Linrandir. He's the Admin and while, technically, he's "second in command," he's the Big Cheese for day to day operations... and he gave you misinformation.

They do NOT delete automatically after 10 days, regardless of having responses or not, as this 20 day old post will attest:

Lin was wrong. I'm going to have to email or PM him or something and give him some crap, now.

As a mod, I can only delve SO deep into the system... and that's like comparing a kiddie pool to an Olympic sized pool.

If you were discussing a trade with someone and THEY deleted their post, all yours would go with it. that's very likely what happened, as many users delete their old posts after they're done with the trade.

IMO, and the opinion of most Mods, Admin & experienced traders, that is a BAD idea, since it lowers your post cound AND deletes any records you might want to retrieve later... but people do it.

As for threads YOU started... I'd need to know what date you posted them, to be certain.

If it was an old thread with a lot of newer posts in it, it's still going to fall off when it's reached "maturity," based on the age of the original post, regardles of the age of newer posts in the thread.

Some statistics:

The Bartertown database is currently 352MB in size. While certainly not the biggest around, there are "cracks" through which things fall sometimes. Unfortunately, we really only have one person doing maintenance, etc. and that's fairly intermittent.

The auto-prune feature is set to 20 days since the last POST. So in theory, you could keep a topic going indefinitely as long as someone posted every 19 days.
It could be set to prune since the last VIEW, but that might get silly.

Lastly, you've got to understand something about the social nature of Bartertown: We're an irreverent bunch of oddballs. Eric knows me well enough to understand what he can get away with, and hassling me over stuff like this is well within those borders. I don't take anything here personally anyway.
