How do I find a bad trader?

Do I just go into the bad trader forum and do a search for the user name of the individual in question? Or, do I have to look through all the posts? Also, I am getting ready to make my first trade, hopefully, and I had some questions. Is it better to make the trade agreement through e-mail or PMing eachother. I would think e-mail would be better because you have proof of an agreement, or is a PM proof of an agreement. What I'm asking is what method of making a final deal is better, through e-mail correspondance or by PM's?

A healthy check of the Bad Trader Forum should help find MOST bad traders. Or, at least one's you probably want to steer clear of. There are some there that just fell on bad luck and take care of the BTR, so use it as a guide.

Definately, check the trader's references. And ask him\her questions if you have any about any particulars in their references.

As for PM's versus Email, either one work as proof. Some guys like email only. Some like PM only. Most will correspond either way. I personally like PM's because I am the only person in my household that has access. My wife has been known to delete emails on me in the past.

So, it's personal preferences. But as far as Bad Traders go, either will work as proof of a bad trade. Just remember to KEEP ALL Correspondence UNTIL references have been left!

Karl's given you some sound advice.
I have a couple small things I'd like to add on:

If everything's been happening via email so far, and you want to check his ref's, just ask him for his User name here. You can search for his profile in the member list, then access his references through there.
If he's scamming you, his name might be fake... but the User name is tied into the site, so you can see his ref's for sure using it.

Additionally, do a search via email address AND a search via name (First and last, AND last name only). Just in case.

Re: PM vs. email... I prefer email. While BOTH are acceptable, I find email easier to use, as I can sort them, file them in specific folders, etc. Plus, if anyone ever accuses you of doctoring something, you can forward an email to an Administrator to prove you're telling the truth. PM's don't forward. All you have with those is the "quote" function, and that isn't fool-proof.

...and, because it's such an important step, to emphasize:

I usually smell their poo.

You can tell a lot about a guy by the smell of his poo.

This...

I....

You...

Oh.
My.
God.

This is wrong on SO many levels.

I have tons of responses to this, and every one would cause me to have to give myself a vacation from the site.

Yeah,

That would find a LOT of bad traders.

the post could go something like this:

I am having a tournament soon and I am in desparate need of 6 Apocalypse sized Armies.
Any 40K army will do. Please only contact me if you have over 6000 points of a particular army.
I will pay 80% of retail.
I have a PAYPAL account that is overloaded with money and I need to use it up.

I will buy from any trader. From new trader to ancient trader. Negative's... That's fine. 0 references... That's great. International sellers... Perfect.

I will send over paypal payment once you let me know you have shipped.

Thanks.

Y'all ain't right in the head.

Using the search function to locate either the username or real name in the BTR forum would suffice. I echo the RELEVANT non-poo-related comments made by other users and Staff Members.

Hey! We are people who model, paint, and play with miniatures. What did you expect? Sunday brunch at the society club?
