warhammer 40k question...

The Orc War Boss that comes in the Black Reach box, could that be used a Nob in a mob as a leader? I am starting a second army and I am not sure, if he is so different that he wouldn't work. To me he is in pretty simple gear, and is slightly larger than a normal Nob, but his base is larger so I wasn't sure.

I base my Ork Nobs on 40mm bases already, that way they are easier for me to note them in a horde of orks.
In regards to the Warboss.. he is SIGNIFICANTLY larger than a Nob.. I think, including his back banner, on the order of 150% the size of a nob. If you wanted to use him, you can.. but that depends on the size of your Warboss already.. and I think the AoBR Warboss is bigger than the metal model.
in Ork Fluff, the biggest Ork is the Warboss.. so it would look odd if the leader of the Nob Mob towers over your Warboss.
Have you put a Nob and the Warboss next to each other to gain a sense of scale for this?

He wouldn't make an effective Nob in most cases.
If you want him as a generic Nob, with a group of Boyz, he's going to TOWER over them.
Like Pork said, though... it depends on your Warboss. If you're using Ghazkul (spelling's wrong, I'm sure) as your Warboss, then he probably won't be too big in comparison to the Warboss.
If that's the case, I still think he's too big for a regular Mob of Boyz, but at least he won't be bigger than your Warboss.

I was looking to use Ghazghkull, but I don't have him yet.
The main reason I am asking is I got in the mood to paint and I painted the Ork War Boss from the Black Reach box... when I talked to a friend about playing Orks from time to time he told me, "That the boss they provide in that box sucks to use, and that I should look for better armor". He then laughed and said that it was a shame I didn't paint a normal Nob hehe
So I am looking to use this model somehow. hehe I hate having cool miniatures painted up, just not be able to use them...
If I were to remount Ghazghkull on base that raised him up a little, would that be better, or would that just be hindering my War Boss since more people could see him. hehe

Eh.. use plasticard and other metallic bits and either give him 'Eavy Armor (I think a 4+ save) or use wire and gubbins and claim he has a Cybork Body for a 5+ Invuln save..
Beyond that.. who needs armor? just gets in the way of swinging the Klaw! (seriously, I hate Mega Armor.. slows them down too much!)
He has a decent loadout.. I planned to use my guy as the way he appears.. Twin Linked Shoota and a Power Klaw, with a Bosspole.. if he gets squished a lot, I would be going for the 5+ Cybork body and counting on my body guard to suck the wounds.. lol

An Ork's best armor is the boyz around him, you really think that the Warboss cares is 20 boys get stomped just ta get to him? Like others have said, do some drilling, add a few bits, call him a Cybork.
