Has anyone played Dark Heresy?

Post by vesrian »

There's a group in the area playing Dark Heresy, and i'm thinking of joining the game. I flipped through the rulebook so i know a little about the game, but not that much. I'd be interested in hearing opinions of the game from someone who's played it or is at least familar with it. Is the system any good? It'd also be nice to know if there's anything i should avoid when making a character.
I follow the generally accepted practice that the person with the lower rating ships first.

Have you ever played a RPG before? If so and you like doing it - and assuming you like the background of the 40k universe - you'll enjoy Dark Heresy. If you happen to like the game mechanics of Warhammer Fantasy roleplay as well, you'll really like the game. If you have a good GM who knows his rules and is very familiar with the 40k universe you'll LOVE the game.

The support materials released so far are nice and it looks like even better stuff is on the horizon. Add to that that former GWer Ross Watson is now at the helm of its development for Fantasy Flight Games and you're golden. I'm acquainted with Ross and he's a great guy who loves the 40k fluff. I can't see how this isn't a win-win situation.

My one and only complaint - and it's not much of one - is that once you choose a career path you're kind of stuck in it. You can customize how your acolyte functions within the game mechanics and, of course, roleplay them however you like but, once you're an Assassin you're an Assassin with all traits, talents and abilities geared in that direction. In WFRP, you start as one career then move to another with a path towards an end goal. DH is more like the original D&D where if you're a Fighter you only get better as a Fighter. Still, it's a pretty fun game system. I'm in the midst of my second gaming group campaign.

i have it, read it and tried 2 different game on rpol.

1st, it uses the same rules as whfb rpg 2nd ed.

2nd. you are limited to being a human. you play an acolyte/retainer/follower or the like in an inquisitor's retinue. the inq is a npc run by the gm.

read the dark herasy novel and you get a good idea of play..depending on gm.
also any of the other inq novels.. except no pc inq.
Heh, I was called a Grognard. ;-)
