Location? Mandatory? Should be!

Hey Gents. (and you others...)
Location should be MANDATORY on this site. Country & state. Its very basic information, but is important to the site.
I occasionally get members contacting me with a potential trade, we work out some details, then they say " By the way Im from the UK." (or wherever)
With the cost of shipping, it changes the entire dynamics of the deal.
Since Btown is being upgraded, maybe we can make location mandatory.
Good trading!

2nd.
I believe it's been brought to the Wizard's attention. He has a post around here with updates he's working on. He responded pretty quickly to posts there.
PM might help as well, if you haven't already.
I definitely agree with you that location should be mandatory.

3rd.
Hopefully with the new update, we will have this info right out there so everybody can see it. It is annoying, but quite a few of our European and Asian Bartertowners state thier location.
I agree that we should ALL have a mandatory location listed.

If you were bigger Post Whores, you'd already know this.

Provided it's an actual location and not some joke like "deep in the webway", or "the center of hell" or some of the other ones I've seen.
Although they may be humorous, there's nothing preventing someone from doing so, even if it's mandatory.

I agree that it should be mandatory, even though I like to put "At Applebee's with your Mom. It's like a date. Don't worry, you can still call me Mat rather than Dad once we get married!" as my location.

Eric, I knew about that one. I just didn't want to muck up Adam's thread. And, I figured some reinforcement here would make a bigger point (don't think about it Erik/Euphemism Man).

Ouch, taking a potshot at the "big guy". I'm sure his homing pidgeons are up and looking for the nearest civilization as I type this. And when they find Lin his internet access you're gonna be in trouble.
A couple of others that I have seen: "right behind you". Or the newest one I saw was "in the closet". I really hope he doesn't come out...
Karl
I must be bored today (I keep quoting people). I better get back at it.
Hey Maple, you could take my mom out for a non-date any day. She's 84 years young and HAPPY. Not.

havig the location as a selectable choice; 1st country, then state/province, then city rather than a fill in the blank; would slow down on the multi-name scams.
an make it easier for shipping.
nothing like giving a quote, then having the other person send their address, and find it in canada.. usually thet happens more than uk or other places in euope.. it seems that canadains don't think much of it..like it's USA lite or such.

I say country, at the very least, should be mandatory.

Yeah, I could live with just country too. I noticed on one of the sites I go to (Dakka maybe??) that they have little flags of the nation that appear next to your username so I know some version of it should hopefully be possible. We'll see, I trust Adam to do what he can and even if the software doesn't support it we could include it as a rule in the user agreement that people have to sign/check that they have read.

I think there shouldnt be any problem with giving a State. Your State is part of the reference system too.
I noticed you gave State & city too.

OK, I'm backing this proposal. I don't want to do international trades anymore - it's just too annoying with the difficulty of tracking and the additional delays.
Or, at least make the non-Americans specify what country they're in...

Yep, however I actually live in a smaller town 5 minutes outside it. Raliegh is just more visible. kinda like people who say they live in Atlanta, but really live in one of the outlying cities.

As a selectable choice it wouldn't slow down anyone wanting to use multiple accounts. If they're willing to lie about one thing, I doubt they'd have any problems with lying about their location in their profile.
If someone they're trading with notices & calls them on it, "Oh, I filled it out wrong. I'll have to change that. Thanks for the information." Or, if they've been on a while, "I just never changed it after I moved. I'll have to get around to that eventually."

Yeah, Med, it's Dakka.
I'd love it, too, if the system could be configured to do it automatically, based off of your IP. I don't know if that's available in phpBB or not, but it would be nice. That really would be a big step towards cutting down on multiple-account abuse.

If it's based on IP, i'll be connecting to Bartertown via a proxy in Bhutan - they have a cool flag.
