What happened to my trade post?

Post by warsmithproteus »

I posted a trade post about a month or so ago, and had been updating it ever so often. I logged on today to update it again and I can't find it. There are trade posts from May but mine is gone.

Whats up with that?

well, there is a max limit, you can post once every week, so i'd do that if i were you. for several reasons:

1. you are back on page #1
2. more people see it.
3. you just get to keep posting every week and you dont have to try and find it.

hope that helps.
Steve.

That still doesn't make sense, there are posts from months behind mine, but mine is gone, and hasn't been that long since I posted here.

I suppose the other posts may have been bumping their posts since then.

Which is odd to me since most forums look down on gratuitous bumping, they usually considerate spamming, but here it is encouraged.

But when in Rome.

Incorrect.

Post bumping is SEVERELY frowned upon here.

So much so that the ABILITY to bump a post has been removed.

Updating your old ad did nothing for you, except with those users who have their settings placed to see new ads or new posts since last time they were in.

My settings, for example, show me ALL threads. I wouldn't SEE your thread/post after it left the 1st page.

Your best bet, as mentioned above, is to start a new one every week.
After a few days, you can swiftly get bumped to the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th page.

Old trade posts expire and automatically get removed from the board. It looks like posts on the 40k board expire after 3 weeks of inactivity. The one post from May might be different because its a poll.

I also agree with the suggstion that you just repost it. I suspect that a lot of traders only look at the most recent posts anyway, so you'd probably get a better response by posting a new ad every week instead of (or in addition to) updating your old one.

Thats the thing, I was planning on updating it after Christmas, and now I see that its gone.

It just seems kinda odd, and a bit of a disservice to those that come back to check on something that they had seen and now its gone.

But whatever.

Well, I can absolutely see where you're coming from.
It would use up less "bandwidth" for a trader to simply reuse the same ad and alter/add items there.

It's a very kind gesture on your part to think that way.

Truth be told, however, that is a far cry from the way the majority of people think. Most don't care that much. BTown has enough power to handle the threads it gets. So most traders, myself included, don't even think twice about how much of their resources we're using.
Fact is, I never EVER look at anything past the first page anymore... haven't in a long time. I'd imagine that a poll would find that most traders here are the same way.
Heck... I don't even look at it if it doesn't have the "new" flag by it because, if I passed it up the first time, it didn't have anything I was that interested in.

Like I said, it's a nice thought, the way you utilized your thread, but it'll be far better for you to just create a new one every 7 days, and the "powers that be" won't mind at all.

The several other boards I frequent have a basic rule about trade posts...and custom posts as well. You make one post and update it when you have new stuff to add. If you make multiple posts then the additional ones get deleted. Pretty simple rule to follow, I'm sure if the "powers" just said this is the way its gonna be, it'd take about a month of getting used to and then everyone would adhere to the rules.

It'd save time for all regular posters, and give everyone the ability to search for stuff that they now want that they remember jon-doe posting a month ago.

Anyway I think thats a better way to do it and worth some consideration. But I'm not here to change any rules or anything, I just wanna sell/trade my tyranids.

LOL on the Nids.
It might be better way, but it depends.
The other sites your efer to... are the DISCUSSION based sites, like DakkaDakka and Warseer, or are they TRADE based sites like Bartertown and BoardGameGeek?

The reason I ask is because they're very different monsters. The discussion sites don't generally want to use up a lot of their resources on trading, because that isn't what they're there for. It's not their focus. Trade based sites, however, expect to get a lot of trade traffic.

Imagine, if you will, if one of the other sites -assuming they're discussion sites- required you to open ONE thread, then update it with whatever the newest topic at hand is that you want to discuss. Can you see how it could get confusing to people and possibly cause people to lose interest? It's similar to that here, with trades.

Imagin if your post, as many often do, had a few people respond to it with "PM Sent." After that, you change your items. Those "PM Sent" posts are still there. People checking in new aren't going to take the time to look at the date of those posts vs the date of your most recent edit. They're just going to make assumptions. At that point, it is easier and better for you to start a new one.

That being said, if you prefer to do it the other way, like you do on other sites, nobody will fault you for it... Well, some might... but nobody SHOULD fault you for it. If you prefer to do it that way, man, then go for it.

Happy trading!

Well it works very well for their trade traffic, given the sites aren't just for trading, and it works well for posting customs which is what they're about and they get tons of traffic for that.

Like I said it'd be kinda hard at first but I think it'd work.

But now I need to rant....

I just posted my trade list, and it didn't go through, I got some kind of error message...I'm on a wireless so I'm sure that had something to do with it.

So I promptly turned around to actually post my trade list since it didn't go through, but it told me that I had already posted it gave me a link and everything...but you click on the link...duh duh daaaaa it doesn't exist. And now, unless someone can fix it, I'll have to wait a week to post my trade list....thats just crazy.

Here is the link address it gives me: viewtopic.php?p=56422

go ahead and click it, it won't take you anywhere.

Ug.
I had a nice long post about the time it happened to be. Btown went wonky when I tried to post it, and I lost the text.

LOL on the irony

Long story short... It happens... RARELY... But, it happens. It happened to me before.

Sometimes they show up later with a different link. Sometimes not.

PM Linrandir. He'll take care of you. He's a good guy (please, don't tell him I said that. It'll go straight to his head).

I sent him a pm. Maybe he'll be able to fix it.

Seems like a lot of trouble to go through to sell something, lol.

I see this post by you:
viewtopic.php?p=103671
from earlier today

Oddly, it didn't show up until i seached for posts by your username. But once i found it and clicked on it, it appeared in the forum. I think i recall this happening to someone else once before. It may be a bug in the forum software.
