I'm trying to strip quite a few newly acquired tyranids, (around 60-70 models), so I bought some paint thinner and tried scrubbing them with a toothbrush but to no avail. I suspect enamel paint. Does anyone recommend a certain brand of paint thinner or something else entirely that helps them strip pieces?

Try "Simple Green". You can even water it down a bit. i like to leave the models in for a few days. Though you can start scrubbing an hour after submerging them.

Thanks for the idea. A well-meaning friend suggested I soak them in paint thinner when scrubbing didn't work. Heh, I'd never tried stripping or even modeling before so I said what the heck. Took em out a couple hours later, and now I've got the only rubber pieces in my area.

Are they easier to scrub the longer they soak?

yes and after i give them a scrub i generally soak them again because you sometimes have to fight through more than one level of paint.

I'm actually working on a "how to strip" tutorial with pictures and everything. I would suggest Castrol Super Clean. Gallon purple jug available at most automotive stores or Wal-Mart type stores. When I get the tutorial together I'll get you a link.

I just wanted to "2nd" the Super Clean.

I've used simple green, brake fluid and lots of other neat ideas to strip a mini. Super Clean did the best overall job of everything because it is safer than vehicle fluids, but tougher than Simple Green.

After significantly long soaks (2-3 weeks) in simple green. I've found that I still need to put a lot of effort into getting the paint of with a brush. Super Clean, OTOH, takes significantly less effort to clean in a short 24 hour soak and is as effective/ safe on plastic as it is on metal.

Soak it overnight, assuming it's a metal mini.

The paint usually 'gels' and you can literally rub it off with your fingers in large 'pieces.'

It has been known to melt plastic minis, if I recall correctly, so be careful.

pine sol melts plastic minis and resin. i had an old armorcast tank, it had several layers of paint on it. i soaked it for several days, scrubbing with a cheap stiff toothbrush, every day or so. paint was still in the crevices, and it became a 'nurgle' tank. every surface wrinkled, like skin in the bathtub.

we use simple green at work. it is a petroleum distillate. sooner or later, it will melt plastic. we also have a stronger version, it's pink in color. both melt sticky adhesive residue in seconds. both also tear up your skin if you don't wear gloves, and get alot on you.

Get yourself a sonic sink/ultrasonic cleaner - can get one from $25 and up on eBay that'l hold a dreadnought, smaller ones (that'll hold a 28mm mini or three) for cheaper. Really saves on the soak-it-forever time and scrubbing time (the sonic works as the brush, so normally just wipe away after a bath)

For cleaning agents, whatever works without melting plastic can work in a sonic sink, though too much dish soap and inattention will leave your work area, the work room, and the stairs leading up to it covered in suds.

Castrol Super Clean and a ultrasonic tank.. = almost new mini...

BTW CSC will work on resin.. at least good quality resin...
