Another option

Another option is to set up a series of smaller purchases rather one large one to establish trust on both sides.

I have made several deals in which I did half shipment then half payment to put people and myself at ease. I guess the Mod deal would work if they were willing to do so.

Sending the money via Paypal seems to be the best bet as it is safer for both parties.

I guess it depends on how much you want the figs. if you really want them I am sure you can reach a mutual agreement that will make it work for both parties.

Certainly a 1/2 and 1/2 deal could work.

Since you have a high rating I think you could ask for this:

You partner could send say 1/3 of the models to you
You would send 1/2 of the payment, that way he is ahead so far, but at least you have some items

Then he sends the rest and you send the final 1/2 payment. Then you both have everything, including addresses and names.

I would also highly recommend that you exchange phone numbers and that perhaps you talk to each other on the phone.

Failing that - I would happily act as a mediator either in conversation or you can send your money and stuff to me and I can ship them out.

Whatever you want!!

He's the new guy, I'd stick to your guns. Have hime send first whether it's half or not, then you send the money. You have established that you are a trustworthy trader/buyer by virtue of your 84 rating. If that's not good enough for him then that's his problem. I realize I sound harsh but if we start going down this willy-nilly path then we might as well do away with the ITL system because if a rating of 84 isn't good enough then why should 100 be or 200??? It's all trust based but you have given him reason to trust you by the 40+ other people who've said you're a stand up guy. That should suffice.

I have been checking references on your end and we have never traded, but you have traded with jagavahn who is also a member of the watch, perhaps he too might be willing to help you with this. I would vouch for you just based on your trade rating, but jagavahn has physically traded with you in the past and this might carry more weight with your potential opposite trader.

LMK what more I can do to help you.

I really do wish that people would pay more attention to feedback. WFFF has completed over 40 successfull trades, and a relative newbie should be willing to risk a bit and send first, since he's an established trader. What-else is the point to having feedback in the first place???

I notice that the only people voicing their opinions on this one are those with high feedback numbers (all but one above 100). As a relative newb, I would stick to what makes this place tick. Lower rating ships first. Regardless of cash or trade, I think this is what makes this place strong and helps it thrive. If I was in this scenario, yes I would be wary of sending everything at once, the only reason I may not send it all at once is if I couldn't afford to ship it, in which case I would ask to break it down in to halves so that 1/2 figs go out, 1/2 money comes in then remaining figs go out and remaining money comes in. Otherwise, I would ship it out and be done with it. What I would like to know is if both had numbers in the single digits (say buyer was an 8 and seller a 6) what would those with more experience recommend in that instance? Not trying to threadjack, just a tangent question.

That's a good question. I had a few trades like that when I was new. We usually agreed to ship simultaneously, but then the stakes were never high enough to really make me worried.

Come to think of it, that's a big point with this situation- what's at stake is considerable, and someone with very little feedback might do well to consier it from someone else's point of view. Why implicitly trust someone with a couple hundred bucks when they have almost no trades under their belt?

Why go to all that trouble?

Lower rating ships first.

If he doesn't want to ship first, move along.
Trading Guidelines:
1. Lower rating ships first - even if I am purchasing.
2. If you agree to buy something, you have 72hrs. in which to pay. If payment is not received in 72hrs., I will automatically post a Non-Payment/Backout thread.
3. Refs are left upon positive receipt of goods, NEVER beforehand!
4. I accept Paypal & USPS money orders and charge for shipping AT COST. I make no profit from it.
5. I trade NIB/new models at retail.

Size of the trade plays such a huge role in any discussion about shipping.

Are we talking $20 worth of models (say a couple of blisters or 4 single common models like SM with meltas or something like that) and a money order fo $10, then the lower rating should send first. I know for some $10 is a big deal and losing $20 worth of models, but really it isn't a huge amount.

Are we talking $100 worth of models and a money order for $50. Here I would try to talk it out. You could do a 1/2, full. 1/2 deal with half the money coming in, all the models going out and then the remainder of the payment upon reciept. Again the lower trade rating ships first.

Are we talking about $500 worth of models and a payment of $300. Here is where it gets really sticky. I would propose a series of trades. Something like $100 worth of models for $50, then $200 worth of models for $150 and then the remainder for the remainder. Also, the lower trade rating sends first. You could even break it down further and in small amounts if you wanted.

I have offered for at least a year to be a moderator at no charge, other than the fact that I can't lose any money. It would add more money and an additional step, but I have been here a while, lots of trades and as a member of Watch I think I have earned the right to be trusted. I would offer that to anyone as long as we discussed it up front.

Also, I think its important to keep your sights low at first. Make a bunch of small trades, even if it seems silly, trade some bitz, trade a couple extra models for something you need. When I first arrived here, I tried to trade with people who had been here a while just because I knew that they were honest. I also tried to pick up little needs first just to get my rating up. Try to keep up with the rating and make sure you get them all, I am like 10 points less than I should be because some people didn't complete their end.

I also negotiated a bunch of trades for things that I didn't need, but that I knew I could trade to someone else who wanted it. Sure, I had a couple of models sitting for awhile until I could move them, but I got my rating up quickly. This seems silly as well, but certain things can be traded all the time, especially things NIB. Anything space marine can be traded easily. Some things are not so good, Dark Eldar, some ork things and certain lists have very specialized items that are tougher to trade without losing a little value (penitent engines, repentia come to mind as a WH player)

Communication is the key. PM or email regularly. Make sure you send with tracking so there are no questions (well I don't do it every time, things under $20 I don't really care, if it gets lost, I'll find another and get it off to them).

Again, some are common sense, but others are just how I did it.

And now, if you have a lower rating you send first. No questions asked. :)

You know Gearhead has a great suggestion with simultaneous trading for people with very similar ratings. I remember doing that a few times.

Excellent suggestion!!

Seems to me that there is some solid advice coming from this thread so far. I remember trading small items when I first started trading. I also fond myself glad to trade w/ established traders as they had refs to back their reliability and this resulted in my trade rating increasing with little risk.

It makes sense for someone w/ low rating a new person for example to trade with higher rated traders and to send w/o issue. This will allow them to build a rep w/o the risks involved with trading with people w/o refs under their belt.

I have made some large trades on this board in excess of $500-600 at times. entire armies and cash deals as well. I find that in trades that size sometimes the person does need to be assured, but I also agree that the entire board,IMHO, is built on the premise that once a person establishes a ref he/she is accorded certain privileges in the shipping realm. I normally use this and have had few trades that were in the bag go south when i asked that the person send first, money or items, in the end I think it comes down to the person that is taking the risk. No offense to those that do not have large ratings( I was once there) but the person with higher feedback is taking the larger risk in this case based merely on the fact that the other trader is untested in multiple trades.

I hope that this works out.

I think it was best said by Oaflord, with his 14 rating. Smart fella, there.

He HAS the low rating and even he agrees that lower should trust the higher when we're talking about a rating as high as yours. Forty-plus trades is big. Period.

I say that you should either stick to your guns about him shipping forst, or you should both ship to an established trader or Watch member that YOU choose. Heep in mind that, in that case, SOMEONE has to pay for shipping it the second time... I think it should be the lower ranked trader, as he's the one who won't trust the higher ranked one.

That is just MY opinion, though.

Eric
Lower rating? You ship first.

I'd go with splitting it into smaller batches.

Which is ironic since I wanted to sell my khador in one big go.. but still.

Smaller batches for less money will be easier and a bit safer. Though I wouldn't neccesarily think that warrants oodles of positive feedback either.
