There are websites that will create avatars from pictures. I would suggest using them, taking note that Bartertown requires no larger than 100 x 100 and 6kb.

Alternatively, you can link your picture, like I've done with mine, by uploading it to photobucket and using a link, instead of uploading it to the system.
