So, I'm curious about how to resolve the fact that people don't always leave trade references. How does one resolve this particular issue.
Well, it's not a requirement to leave a reference. Keep that in mind.
That said, there are a couple things you can do to help.
1) When discussing your trade, who will ship first, etc., make a note that, "At the end of the trade, we will exchange references" (or something similar). This puts it in the other person's mind that it's expected. Ask for an agreement on that point.
2) At the end of the trade, when both sides have their stuff, send a PM "All looks good on my end. Are we ready to exchange positive refefences? This is another reminder about them.
3) Leave your ref and, if they don't leave one for you, send a reminder after a week, and another after another week. If you still don't get one, let it drop. You're not going to.
That's how I handle it.
