Hi

Firstly I'm sort of a technophobe, so please forgive the silly questions ;)
I'm trying to help my Husband sell some of his 40k models as he has all the armies, been collecting for about 25yrs.
If I ask a question then perhaps one of you lovely peeps might help :))
As a newbie do I have to send item before I get paid and what assurances are there that I'll receive it?
The items of 40k I've seen seem to be linked to the dreaded ebay, is that right and if so how do I go about it?
Are there many people from the uk-feeling a bit out of my depth as all the ads I've seen are from USA.
I've seen a few ads whereby the buyer covers shipment ,do weigh the merchantize and let them know weight, then they let me have payment via Paypal????
I know, I know but I'm still using imperial weight and measures
By the way he's not a trader.

Welcome!

First, we do have our share of UK folks around here, but additionally there is an offshoot in the UK: http://www.bartertownuk.com/

We have a system of references here (the little numbers next to our names). Traditionally, the lower reference ships first, though with purchases that is sometimes negotiable depending on the feedback of the person buying and their willingness to pay. I would say usually a the buyer pays shipping, but that is all up to the individuals, just be sure that the trader knows whether quotes include shipping or not so there is no miscommunication. You can use Ebay, which provides its own system of buyer/seller protection (which I am not really familiar with). Things here are more of an 'at your own risk' type deal, but we have a good community and if you seek reputable traders this is rarely a problem. You can view the bad trader forums to see how we resolve (or attempt to resolve) disputes around here.

Good luck in your trading!

I do want to stress one thing - we have NO RULES regarding who ships first.
Some people refer to it as a "Bartertown Rule" that the lower rated trader ships first, but they're wrong or just misspeaking.

It is a common convention that the lower rated trader ships (or pays) first, as the higher rated trader has done more to prove themselves. You are not required to follow it (though, you'll get more trades/sales if you do).

Just be careful, ask more questions than you need to and provide more information about the items you're getting rid of than you're asked for.
Read our posted rules. They're a wealth of information and can keep you out of trouble (with staff and with trades).

When in doubt, send a PM to anyone with a green ID or Red ID. They're staff and make millions of $ each year in salary for doing just that sort of thing.
OKay... so, they're unpaid volunteers... that's still why they're here, though.

another re-iteration.. asking questions FIRST saves tons of issues LATER.

Even if the questions you have seem completely off-the-wall, you want to ask.

With overseas a possibility, you may want to limit yourself to traders with a reference score over 100(50 trades)
